My brother Ethan’s voice blasted through the speaker, frantic and shaking with panic.

His brand-new midnight-blue BMW M4 was sitting in an impound lot outside Chicago, and somehow he had decided that I—his younger sister, who regularly worked eighty-hour weeks as an accounting manager—was responsible for getting him out of the financial hole he’d created.

My stomach tightened with anger.

Only three weeks earlier, Ethan had thrown an extravagant champagne-filled party to celebrate buying a car he clearly couldn’t afford. He spent the entire night boasting that he was finally “living the American dream.”

Then he drained his savings.

Quit his stable job because he claimed it was “beneath his new status.”

And apparently assumed the rest of us would finance whatever happened next.

The insurance payment was due.

His rent was due.

And his bank account was empty.

I told him no.
