“Stop bullying your poor sister!” my mother shouted as I stood beside my ruined $7,800 wedding dress. Vanessa still held the scissors, smirking while tears rolled down my cheeks. “You can wear something else,” she laughed. Three hours before my wedding, they thought they’d destroyed everything. Then my future mother-in-law appeared in the doorway with a mysterious black garment bag. “Shall we begin?” she asked. What she showed them next left both speechless…

Three hours before my wedding, I entered my bridal suite to find my sister standing over my shredded gown, scissors shaking in her hand. My scream brought Mother running. “You’re the problem! Stop bullying your poor sister!” she yelled, unaware that my future mother-in-law was watching from the doorway.

I’m Emily Parker, twenty-nine, and that Saturday should have been the happiest day of my life.

I’d spent eighteen months organizing my wedding to James Whitmore, the kindest man I’d ever met.

My dream gown featured ivory silk, intricate lace, and hundreds of pearls sewn by hand.

I’d saved $7,800 for it.

But now its lace was torn, its skirt slashed, and its pearl-covered bodice ripped apart.

My older sister Vanessa stood nearby.

“What have you done?” I whispered.

She glanced at the scissors.

Then smiled.

“Relax, Emily. I was fixing it.”

“Fixing it? You’ve destroyed my wedding dress!”

She crossed her arms.

“Honestly, it looked ridiculous anyway.”

I touched the damaged fabric.

Years of dreams seemed to crumble in my hands.

Then Mother, Patricia, entered.

“What’s all this screaming?”

I gestured toward Vanessa.

“She cut my dress!”

Mom barely examined the damage.

“Vanessa was helping you!”

“Helping me?”

“You’ve always been jealous of your sister. Stop bullying her!”

I stared in disbelief.

Vanessa had always been Mother’s favorite.

When she failed college, Mom blamed the professors.

When Vanessa wrecked my first car, Mom insisted I apologize for letting her borrow it.

And when her fiancé left her two years ago, my own happiness somehow became offensive.

Now she’d ruined my wedding gown.

And Mother still defended her.

“You can wear something else,” Vanessa remarked casually.

She laughed.

“Unless James finally realizes what a mistake he’s making.”

Tears stung my eyes.

Before I could respond, a composed voice came from the doorway.

“Actually, she won’t need to wear something else.”

My future mother-in-law, Catherine Whitmore, entered.

A long black garment bag hung from her hand.

She looked remarkably calm.

Her gaze moved from Vanessa to Mother.

Then she smiled warmly at me.

“Emily, sweetheart,” she said, opening the zipper.

“Shall we begin?”
