My key no longer fit the new silver lock, installed sometime between 8 a.m. and 10:15 p.m. Michael had changed the locks on the condo I legally owned. The door opened, revealing Michael barefoot, calm, and wearing the gray lounge set I\u2019d given him for Christmas. Then a woman called from inside.<\/p>\n

\u201cMichael? Who\u2019s at the door?\u201d<\/p>\n

His mother. Linda. Michael glanced at the phone in my hand.<\/p>\n

Michael muttered, \u201cMom, stay out of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Linda never stayed out of anything in her life.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe lives here,\u201d she said. \u201cHe contributes. He is your husband. You don\u2019t get to disappear for fourteen hours a day and then come home acting like you\u2019re some kind of landlord.\u201d<\/p>\n

With the dispatcher still listening, I opened my phone\u2019s folder containing property-tax, insurance, closing, and deed records. I showed Michael the deed, bearing only one owner\u2019s name: Emily Bennett.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you forgot something,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Michael didn\u2019t look at the screen.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is exactly what you always do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou come home exhausted. We eat takeout. You answer emails at night. You barely talk to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

For once, he said something that sounded almost reasonable.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you were unhappy in our marriage, you could have talked to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You complained.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael\u2019s face hardened.<\/p>\n

Michael turned. Two Chicago police officers stepped into the hallway. Linda immediately pulled my robe tighter around herself. One officer, a woman in her forties, looked from me to the belongings on the floor, then toward Michael standing in the doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily Bennett?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I raised my phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have my identification, the recorded deed, property tax records, and proof this is my primary residence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael stepped forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am,\u201d the officer interrupted, \u201cI need you to stop for a moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Linda went quiet. The second officer glanced past Michael into the condo. His expression changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cSir,\u201d he said, \u201cwho else is inside the residence?\u201d<\/p>\n

Michael froze. Linda\u2019s face lost its color.<\/p>\n
