Our five-month-old daughter, Ivy, finally slept against my chest after hours of feeding, pumping, diaper changes, pediatrician calls, and eating half a slice of toast while standing.<\/p>\n

Ivy had struggled to fall asleep for nearly forty minutes. Her warm cheek rested against my collarbone, a tiny fist beneath her chin, her breathing finally steady.<\/p>\n

Grant dropped his keys into the ceramic bowl.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m speaking normally.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n

He gave that dismissive laugh I\u2019d grown to hate.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo now I have to whisper in my own house?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe just fell asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere.\u201d<\/p>\n

He gestured as if I\u2019d confirmed his argument.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything revolves around keeping her asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a five-month-old baby.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know how old my daughter is.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why are you acting surprised that she needs things?\u201d<\/p>\n

His jaw tightened. Grant had always disliked correction. Before Ivy, I\u2019d teased him about arguing with GPS directions even after getting lost. Back then, it seemed harmless.<\/p>\n

Lately, that stubbornness had become sharper.<\/p>\n

He glanced at the bottles.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe house used to feel calm.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost laughed.<\/p>\n

The counters were clean, the dishwasher running, and dinner ingredients thawing in the refrigerator. The basket held neatly folded baby clothes. Three bottles and two sterilizer parts were drying because that was what caring for a baby required.<\/p>\n

Apparently, this qualified as chaos.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you want calm,\u201d Grant said, \u201ccreate it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I held Ivy closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m trying.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you?\u201d<\/p>\n

His tone was worse than shouting.<\/p>\n

I\u2019d heard it when Ivy cried during conference calls, when a diaper-delivery box remained in the foyer, or when I forgot his sparkling water.<\/p>\n

Every small imperfection seemed to conceal the same accusation.<\/p>\n

What exactly do you do all day?<\/p>\n

Sometimes he asked outright.<\/p>\n

That afternoon, he finally voiced something worse.<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes I think Ivy is becoming an excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

I struggled to understand.<\/p>\n

She had Grant\u2019s mouth. People had said so since her birth, and it once filled me with tenderness.<\/p>\n
