I boarded that airplane believing the most difficult part of the journey would be traveling without my late husband for the first time.

Instead, I ended up sitting beside a man who seemed to think my kindness gave him the right to take advantage of me.

For four exhausting hours, he pushed his knees into my space, occupied my armrest, and acted as though I’d paid for only half a seat.

Whenever I politely asked him to move, he mocked my size.

“Come on, lady. You’re tiny. You don’t need all that room.”

I was sixty-one years old, barely five feet two, and had spent most of my life trying to avoid unnecessary arguments.

But when that man finally got up to use the restroom, I made a decision he never expected.

By the time he returned, I was sitting somewhere else.

He stopped in the aisle, stared at my empty seat, and turned bright red.

Then he spotted me two rows behind him.

**“What the hell did you do?!”**

Several passengers turned to watch.

This time, I wasn’t going to apologize.

***

My name is Celeste, and I’ve never been particularly good at confrontation.

For most of my adult life, I worked as a school secretary.

I’d spent years dealing with frustrated parents, impatient teachers, upset students, and difficult telephone conversations.

I’d learned to calm people down with a gentle voice and a little patience.

Unfortunately, I had also developed a habit of sacrificing my own comfort to avoid upsetting anyone else.

My husband, Steven, used to tease me about it.

Once, while we were shopping for groceries, I accidentally bumped into an abandoned shopping cart.

Without thinking, I whispered, “Oh, I’m sorry.”

Steven burst out laughing.

“Sweetheart, I don’t think the cart’s feelings are hurt.”

“Well, I might have startled it.”

He spent the rest of our shopping trip dramatically apologizing to shelves and shopping baskets.

That was Steven.

He could make me laugh at the most ordinary things.

We’d been married for thirty-four years when he passed away the previous year.

Since then, the world had felt different.

Not impossible.

Just unfamiliar.

Traveling alone was one of the things I hadn’t yet grown accustomed to.

But this trip was special.

I was flying across the country to meet my first grandchild.

My daughter, Marianne, had recently given birth to a beautiful baby girl named Rose.

For weeks, she’d been sending me photographs.

Rose sleeping.

Rose yawning.

Rose wearing tiny knitted outfits.

Rose curled up with one little fist beside her cheek.
