\u201cMom wanted that money to fund medical scholarships,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDead women don\u2019t make financial decisions,\u201d Judith snapped. \u201cLiving families do.\u201d<\/p>\n

A week before dying, Mom had held my fingers and made me promise her life\u2019s work would continue. She\u2019d spent forty years building a community medical clinic and saving every dividend. Judith hadn\u2019t even attended her funeral, choosing a spa opening instead.<\/p>\n

She slid a document across the table, demanding I authorize the estate trustee to transfer all assets into a company account by noon. Beneath it lay another document: a promissory note supposedly signed by Mom, acknowledging an $8 million debt to Morgan Development.<\/p>\n

I immediately recognized the date. September ninth.<\/p>\n

Judith leaned closer. \u201cYou have no career worth discussing, Claire. Without us, you\u2019re just a widow\u2019s daughter playing with spreadsheets.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019d quit my forensic accounting job to care for Mom. Judith saw that as weakness. She had no idea I\u2019d spent six nights examining entries from her company\u2019s loan applications, or that Mom\u2019s independent trustee had contacted me about a suspicious estate claim.<\/p>\n

I examined the document in my hands. It wasn\u2019t Judith\u2019s transfer authorization but a court-stamped filing my lawyer had delivered an hour earlier.<\/p>\n
