The woman’s debit card was rejected once.

She gave me an embarrassed little smile and tried again.

When the payment terminal flashed **DECLINED** a second time, that smile disappeared.

Behind her, a man wearing a camouflage baseball cap released an exaggerated sigh.

Someone farther back in the checkout line muttered, “This is ridiculous.”

One of the two infants strapped against the woman’s chest was crying desperately, his little face bright red.

She looked at me with trembling lips.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “Could you take the diapers off the bill?”

I glanced at the register.

She was short exactly $8.42.

Eight dollars and forty-two cents.

I couldn’t possibly have known that covering such a small amount would lead me to something my family had been missing for twenty-two years.

But to understand what happened, I need to tell you about that morning.

My name is Rachel Hale. I’m thirty-four years old, and I work as a cashier at Hollis Market in Millbrook, a small town where practically everyone knows everyone else’s business.

That Friday, my alarm rang at six.

I pressed snooze, then spent a few minutes staring at the water stain on my bedroom ceiling.

It vaguely resembled a rabbit.

I’d been promising myself to get the roof inspected for nearly two years, but every time I thought I might have enough money, another bill arrived.

Downstairs, I could hear my mother preparing breakfast.

The kettle whistled.

An old country song played softly on the radio.

A chair scraped against the kitchen floor.

I’m thirty-four and still share a house with my mother.

Years ago, I might have been ashamed to admit that.

Not anymore.

After my father died, we only had each other. Somewhere along the way, our relationship became more than simply a mother and daughter living beneath the same roof.

We became each other’s support system.

I pulled on my green work shirt, the one with HOLLIS MARKET embroidered above the pocket, and headed downstairs.

“Morning, Rae,” Mom greeted me.

She was sitting at the kitchen table with her coffee, the electricity bill spread in front of her, and a pencil tucked behind one ear.

That pencil was never a promising sign.

“How much?” I asked.

She removed her glasses.
