\u201cIt started before we moved here,\u201d she said softly. \u201cAt first, I thought I was imagining it. Esteban was always polite, always helpful. Then he began standing too close. Saying things he could pretend were innocent.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach turned.<\/p>\n

Why didn\u2019t you tell Tom\u00e1s?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I was afraid no one would believe me. Men like him survive because women hesitate.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she told me everything.<\/p>\n

The footsteps outside her door.<\/p>\n

The light under the frame.<\/p>\n

The doorknob slowly turning at night.<\/p>\n

And why she had begun sleeping between me and Esteban.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t try anything with you there,\u201d she whispered. \u201cI thought if I made myself impossible to reach without exposing him, he would stop.\u201d<\/p>\n

I felt sick.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to. But everyone loves him. Your mother praises him. Tom\u00e1s trusts him. I thought I would be blamed for ruining the family.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at her and said the only words she needed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe you.\u201d<\/p>\n

She broke then, crying like someone who had been carrying terror for too long.<\/p>\n

The next day, I began watching my husband.<\/p>\n

Once I looked closely, I could not stop seeing it. The way his eyes followed Luc\u00eda too long. The way he checked where Tom\u00e1s was before entering a room. The way his kindness suddenly looked less like care and more like control.<\/p>\n

That afternoon, while Esteban showered, I searched his office.<\/p>\n

Inside his desk drawer, I found an old black phone.<\/p>\n

No password.<\/p>\n

Inside were hidden photos.<\/p>\n

Screenshots of women.<\/p>\n

Cropped images.<\/p>\n

And then one photo that made my hands go cold.<\/p>\n

Luc\u00eda on our roof, hanging sheets, taken secretly from inside the house.<\/p>\n

There was also a short dark video aimed at a bedroom door.<\/p>\n

I knew exactly whose door it was.<\/p>\n

I sent the evidence to my phone and placed the device back where I found it.<\/p>\n

The confrontation came that Sunday.<\/p>\n

Tom\u00e1s sat upstairs repairing a fan while Luc\u00eda trembled on the couch. I handed him my phone.<\/p>\n

He looked confused at first.<\/p>\n

Then horrified.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere did this come from?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cEsteban\u2019s hidden phone,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Luc\u00eda could not speak, so I spoke for her.<\/p>\n
