My father announced that our family was taking a dream vacation to Italy, then casually explained that it was “just the five of us.” Somehow, my brother’s fiancée had earned a place on the trip, but I hadn’t.

I swallowed my disappointment and went to work without arguing.

Then, at exactly 11:47 that night, my phone lit up with a bank notification.

**$9,600 had been charged to my credit card.**

The transaction came from the same travel agency handling my family’s Italian vacation.

When I opened the receipt, I found five passenger names.

My parents.

My brother.

My sister.

And my brother’s fiancée.

My name wasn’t there.

They had deliberately excluded me from the vacation—and apparently expected me to pay for it.

But the most disturbing discovery came when I checked the payment settings.

My card wasn’t just being used for the initial charge.

It had been registered as the primary payment method for the entire trip.

And there were more charges scheduled.

“We’ve finally booked our trip to Italy,” Dad announced over breakfast.

He placed his coffee cup on the table and smiled as though he’d just shared wonderful news.

“Rome, Florence, Venice. It’s going to be incredible.”

I looked up.

Italy.

For years, I’d talked about wanting to visit Italy.

I’d saved photographs of the canals in Venice, the architecture in Florence, and the beautiful old streets of Rome.

I’d even suggested that our family take a European vacation together one day.

So when Dad mentioned Italy, I naturally assumed we were discussing a family trip that included me.

Then he added something that made my smile disappear.

“It’s just going to be the five of us, Victoria. You understand, right?”

I looked around the breakfast table.

Dad.

Mom.

My younger sister, Madison.

My brother, Ryan.

And Ryan’s fiancée, Brooke, who wasn’t there that morning but would apparently be joining them.

Five people.

I slowly lowered my coffee.

“Five?”

Dad nodded.

“Yes.”

“Not including me?”

There was an uncomfortable pause.

Mom continued buttering her toast.

Madison suddenly became fascinated by something on her phone.

Ryan shrugged as though the decision had already been made and there was no reason to discuss it.

Dad finally answered.
