Mark handed Officer Ruiz another document, and Claire noticed the officer’s expression grow serious as he examined it.

Until then, Diane had treated everything as a misunderstanding that would vanish once someone in authority arrived.

Three suitcases remained on the porch behind her.

Storage bins stood beside the railing. A garment bag hung from a suitcase handle, while prescription bags and toiletries filled a tote. Even Diane’s peace lily sat near the entrance, as though someone had already reserved a sunny corner for it.

Lisa still held her phone.

Mark stood between his mother and wife, looking like a man who finally understood that nobody would simply forget what he’d done that afternoon.

Officer Ruiz checked the paperwork again.

Then turned to Mark.

“Is this current?” he asked.

Mark swallowed.

“Yes.”

Ruiz tilted the page to verify the printed name.

Claire didn’t need to see the document.

She already knew its contents.

Diane didn’t.

That was the problem.

Less than two hours earlier, Diane had confidently stood at Claire’s front door and declared, “My son owns this house.”

She’d spoken as though ownership settled everything.

As though Mark could overrule Claire’s wishes.

As though Claire’s home office could be reassigned because Lisa valued her own spare room more.

As though a seventy-four-year-old mother arriving with three suitcases could automatically turn a family favor into a permanent arrangement.

But Officer Ruiz wasn’t interested in family assumptions.

He was examining a document.

“Mrs. Bennett,” he said, turning toward Claire, “this lists you as the property owner.”

Diane blinked.

Lisa lowered her phone slightly.

Mark stared at the porch floorboards.

Claire felt no sudden triumph.

Mostly, she was exhausted.

The officer had just confirmed something that should never have required police lights, a 911 call, and luggage piled outside her door.

“Yes,” Claire said. “That’s correct.”

Diane immediately faced Mark.

“No.”

Mark rubbed his neck.

“Mom.”

“You said this was your house.”

“I said we lived here.”

“That is not what you said.”

Lisa finally stopped filming.

It was the first helpful thing she’d done since arriving.

Claire recalled the text that started everything at 4:17 that afternoon.

Mom’s moving in. It’s already decided.

Not a question.

Not even an invitation to discuss it.

Just a declaration.
