The knitted baby booties should have brought a smile to Andrew’s face. Instead, my daughter’s doctor-turned-husband turned pale when she suggested a name for their first baby. Before dinner was over, he pulled me aside and admitted that a page from Amanda’s old medical records had troubled him since their first meeting.

“Go home, Mom. Your back hurts in that chair.”

Amanda was fourteen, hooked up to two machines and barely able to sit upright.

Yet she was worried about my back.

“I’m comfortable, sweetheart,” I said.

“You make that face when you’re lying.”

“What face?”

“That one.”

She pointed at me with what little strength she had.

I laughed for her sake, then waited until she was asleep before allowing myself to cry.

***

Amanda had battled serious illness since childhood. By twenty, she’d celebrated more birthdays in hospitals than at home.

Robin and I had become accustomed to waiting.

For test results.

For medications to take effect.

For doctors to stop describing things as “concerning.”

Eventually, we heard the words every parent dreads.

There was little more they could do.

Then we discovered a hospital testing a newer treatment approach for patients with conditions like Amanda’s.

That’s where Andrew entered our lives.

He belonged to her specialist team.

When I first saw him, he was standing beside Amanda’s bed, studying her chart.

He paused over a particular page, staring silently before closing the folder and turning toward her.

“How are you feeling today?”

“Like I’ve been hit by a bus, but the bus was very organized about it.”

Andrew smiled.

He asked about her pain, what aggravated it, and how much she’d managed to eat.

Then came an unexpected question.

“And what would you like to do if we can get you feeling better?”

Amanda blinked.

“You mean medically?”
