“Don’t be selfish. She’s your family,” my mother snapped when I refused to give my half-sister another $2,000. Then she pointed toward the door and ordered, “Get out.” My sister smirked triumphantly. I left without arguing. Three days later, she called in a panic, “Emma, Mom’s losing the house!” I sat upright, instantly alert. “No,” I said. “She’s just finding out who actually owns it.”

Mom demanded $2,000 as though collecting a debt I’d never agreed to pay. When I refused, she pointed toward the front door and declared, “Then get out—and don’t come back when you finally remember what family means.”

The money was for my half-sister, Kayla.

Again.

“She needs it for rent,” Mom said.

“Last month it was her car.”

“She’s struggling.”

“She bought a designer bag three days ago.”

Mom’s expression hardened. “Don’t be selfish, Emma. You only think about yourself. This is your family.”

Kayla sat across the kitchen island, scrolling through her phone with the very handbag I’d mentioned beside her.

She smiled without looking up.

“I didn’t ask her to be difficult,” she said.

I stared.

At twenty-six, Kayla had quit three jobs, abandoned two training courses, and somehow made every financial emergency my problem.

I’d already covered her phone bill, paid a security deposit, and lent her $4,500 she never returned.

“I’m done,” I said.

Mom struck the counter with her palm.

“You make six figures.”

“That doesn’t make me an ATM.”

“You think you’re better than us because you have some fancy job.”

My so-called “fancy job” involved overseeing operations for a regional property company.

Mom didn’t know I’d recently become chief operating officer.

Even less did she understand that the house we stood in—the one she constantly claimed was hers—hadn’t belonged to her in nearly four years.

After Dad’s death, Mom fell behind on mortgage payments and property taxes. The lender was preparing to foreclose.

I purchased the mortgage through an LLC, settled the overdue taxes, and allowed her to remain under a formal lease costing one dollar annually.

She never examined the documents.

She simply signed where I indicated.

I helped because she was my mother.

I continued because I hoped appreciation would eventually replace her sense of entitlement.

It never happened.

“Pack your things,” she said. “If family means so little to you, you don’t belong here.”

Kayla finally looked up and smirked.

“Guess your money can buy you a hotel.”

I grabbed my coat.

“Are you sure?”

Mom laughed.

“Absolutely.”

I nodded.

“Okay.”

My response confused her.

She’d expected crying, an apology, perhaps my credit card being placed on the counter.

Instead, I went upstairs, gathered the few belongings left in my childhood room, and walked out.

Three days later, my phone rang at 6:11 a.m.

Kayla was screaming.

“Emma, Mom got a notice. Something about the house. She’s losing it.”

I sat upright.

“No,” I said quietly.

“She’s finally reading the lease.”
