I woke after six hours of knee surgery to fifty-eight missed calls and a voicemail from my father: “We sold your townhouse to pay for your sister’s wedding.

After six hours of knee surgery, I woke to fifty-eight missed calls and a voicemail that sent a chill through me despite the anesthesia. My father said, “We sold your townhouse to pay for your sister’s wedding. You were completely out, so we signed the paperwork for you.”

For a moment, I thought I was imagining things.

I replayed the message.

My townhouse.

The home I’d purchased at twenty-nine after six years of working two jobs.

Worth $512,000.

The wedding was only three weeks away.

My leg barely moved, but my hands stayed steady as I called Dad.

He picked up at once.

“Oh, good. You’re awake.”

“Tell me you’re joking.”

He sighed. “Megan deserves a proper wedding, Claire.”

“You sold my house?”

“It’s family property.”

“No. It’s my property.”

Mom took the phone.

“Don’t be selfish. You’re single. Megan is starting a family.”

I glanced around the recovery room, taking in the IV and the brace securing my knee.

“How did you sign?”

Neither answered immediately.

Finally, Dad said, “We handled it.”

“How?”

“You gave us power of attorney years ago.”

I nearly smiled.

That authorization had expired four years earlier.

They clearly had no idea.

Two years before surgery, I’d become senior counsel at a title insurance company, handling fraudulent deeds, forged signatures, unlawful transfers, and closing fraud.

My parents only knew I “worked in real estate.”

They’d never bothered to learn more.

“Who bought it?” I asked.

Dad paused.

“An investor.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

His evasiveness confirmed my suspicion.

They hadn’t simply betrayed me.

They’d acted hastily.

And hurried transactions leave evidence.

I hung up and played Megan’s voicemail.

“You’re probably mad, but please don’t ruin this for me. The venue is nonrefundable.”

No apology or concern.

They assumed the money belonged to them.

I pressed the nurse’s call button.

“Can I have my laptop from my bag?”

She frowned. “You just came out of surgery.”

“I know.”

Ten minutes later, I located the recorded deed online.

It carried my signature.

A forgery.

I recognized the notary, too.

She was a former employee dismissed by my company over improper notarizations.

Suddenly, the pain in my knee seemed insignificant.

I placed a single call.

Not to the police.

Not yet.

I contacted our head of fraud investigations.

“David,” I said, “I need an emergency title review.”

The seriousness in my voice stopped his joking.

“Property address?”

I told him.

Then added, “And freeze every dollar connected to the closing if you still can.”
