For six months, I allowed my son and his wife to live in my home on the Maine coast without paying me anything.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

No rent.<\/p>\n

No utilities.<\/p>\n

Not even grocery money.<\/p>\n

Then one Tuesday morning, my daughter-in-law walked into my kitchen, checked the time on her phone, and informed me that I needed to leave.<\/p>\n

Not forever, she explained.<\/p>\n

Only for the summer.<\/p>\n

As though two months somehow made it reasonable.<\/p>\n

As though being temporarily removed from your own bedroom became less insulting if the person telling you smiled politely.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy parents are flying in Friday,\u201d Heather said. \u201cThey\u2019ll be staying here, so you\u2019ll need to stay somewhere else.\u201d<\/p>\n

My son Julian was sitting less than ten feet away.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t say a word.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t shout.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t cry.<\/p>\n

And I didn\u2019t tell Heather what immediately came to mind.<\/p>\n

I finished my coffee.<\/p>\n

Carried the cup to the sink.<\/p>\n

Then walked outside.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, I made a phone call.<\/p>\n

By Friday afternoon, when Heather returned from the airport with her parents and their luggage, the key she carried would be useless.<\/p>\n

And the front door she had slowly begun treating like her own would no longer open for her.<\/p>\n

My name is Helen Vance.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m sixty-six.<\/p>\n

A widow.<\/p>\n

And before I retired, I spent thirty years working as a high school librarian.<\/p>\n

People assume librarians spend their days shelving books and asking teenagers to lower their voices.<\/p>\n

We do some of that.<\/p>\n

Mostly, however, you learn to observe.<\/p>\n

Quiet jobs teach you a great deal about people.<\/p>\n

You notice who returns what they borrow.<\/p>\n

Who damages something and hides it.<\/p>\n

Who apologizes because they feel remorse and who apologizes only because someone caught them.<\/p>\n

You also learn that the loudest person in a room is rarely the one with the most actual authority.<\/p>\n

And eventually, you learn something else.<\/p>\n

Not every story deserves another chapter.<\/p>\n

Sometimes you simply close the book.<\/p>\n

My husband Robert and I bought our house near the Maine coast when Julian was seven.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t impressive then.<\/p>\n

The roof leaked above the mudroom.<\/p>\n

The kitchen had ugly yellow laminate counters.<\/p>\n

And the upstairs plumbing made disturbing noises every winter.<\/p>\n

But beyond a line of pine trees, you could see the ocean from the back porch.<\/p>\n

Robert stood there during our first viewing and said,<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we could grow old here.\u201d<\/p>\n

We almost did.<\/p>\n

Over the years, we repaired the roof.<\/p>\n

Replaced the windows.<\/p>\n

Remodeled the kitchen.<\/p>\n

Robert built a cedar porch himself and complained about lumber prices from the first board to the last.<\/p>\n

I planted hydrangeas along the fence.<\/p>\n

And almost every morning, no matter how cold it was, we drank coffee outside.<\/p>\n

Then Robert died.<\/p>\n

A sudden heart attack.<\/p>\n

There was no time to prepare.<\/p>\n

One Wednesday morning, I was his wife making breakfast.<\/p>\n

By Thursday night, I was a widow staring at his coffee mug beside the sink because moving it felt impossible.<\/p>\n

People assumed I would sell the house.<\/p>\n

Julian suggested it several times.<\/p>\n

Too large for one person.<\/p>\n

Repairs.<\/p>\n
