Bills.<\/p>\n

Lucy\u2019s preschool calendar.<\/p>\n

My prenatal appointments.<\/p>\n

One evening, Jack watched me organizing pills at the kitchen table.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know you don\u2019t have to control every minute of every day, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m six months pregnant, Lucy is four, and my husband has cancer. Which part of that situation would you like me to stop managing?\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiled weakly.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe start with me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re the least trustworthy part.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve been together since high school.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cExactly. I have years of evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n

He laughed.<\/p>\n

Then immediately started coughing so hard he had to hold the edge of the table.<\/p>\n

That was how we survived those months.<\/p>\n

I organized everything.<\/p>\n

Jack made jokes.<\/p>\n

And neither of us said the thing we were both thinking.<\/p>\n

That he might not survive.<\/p>\n

During the final months of his illness, Jack started disappearing.<\/p>\n

Not constantly.<\/p>\n

But enough that I noticed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere were you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOut.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor three hours?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI needed air.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can barely make it through Target.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s in your jacket?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThose are papers.\u201d<\/p>\n

He gave me the look he always used when he knew I was about to interrogate him.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you were on your laptop at two this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n

He leaned forward and kissed my forehead.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t interrogate the dying man.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI hate when you joke like that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at the papers again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever you\u2019re doing, you can tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I could.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He glanced down.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou already have enough to carry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not your decision.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes it should be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does that even mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

He studied me for a second.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf someone showed up tomorrow and needed help, you\u2019d say yes before asking whether you could afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat sounds like a compliment.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt scares me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you never know when to let somebody else be the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, I thought he deserved one part of his life where cancer\u2014and I\u2014weren\u2019t constantly watching him.<\/p>\n

So I stopped asking.<\/p>\n

After he died, that became one of my first regrets.<\/p>\n

Five weeks later, Jack\u2019s condition deteriorated quickly.<\/p>\n

Near the end, I sat beside him holding his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look scared,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo do you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m allowed.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo am I.\u201d<\/p>\n

He almost smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll be okay.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t say that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, Jack.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPromise me you\u2019ll keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

He squeezed my fingers weakly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou always do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those were the last clear words he ever said to me.<\/p>\n

Three days after his death, I sat at our kitchen table staring at a funeral invoice and two overdue notices.<\/p>\n
