“How could you do this?” Mark shouted.

The entire dining room fell silent.

Not the uncomfortable silence people make when they don’t know what to say.

Not the polite silence of guests trying to avoid getting involved.

This was the kind of silence that settles over a room when everyone realizes they are watching a marriage split open right in front of them.

Mark stood at the head of the table, his face burning red, one hand wrapped tightly around the back of his chair.

Claire was still sitting beside him.

In the seat that had been mine.

Her wineglass hovered halfway between the table and her mouth.

Beside every dessert plate was a small ivory envelope.

One for every guest.

One for Mark.

And one for Claire.

I rested my palm against my stomach.

Our baby moved softly beneath my hand.

That tiny kick steadied me.

“I’m sorry,” I said evenly. “Which part exactly are you angry about?”

Mark stared at me.

“You know exactly what I mean.”

I glanced around the table.

Rachel, his sister, was staring down at the envelope in front of her.

Daniel had already opened his.

Elaine, Mark’s mother, had one hand pressed over her mouth.

Claire was the only person who still seemed amused.

Barely.

Because she hadn’t opened her envelope yet.

“Go ahead,” I said to her.

Her expression shifted.

“Open it.”

Mark brought his palm down against the table.

“No one opens another envelope.”

Daniel looked up.

“Little late for that.”

Mark turned sharply toward him.

Daniel lifted the photograph from inside his envelope.

Naturally, it was only a copy.

The originals were somewhere Mark would never find them.

The photograph showed Mark standing outside a hotel with Claire.

It wasn’t from years ago.

It wasn’t from when they had been married.

It had been taken three weeks earlier.

Claire’s hand rested against his chest.

Mark had both arms around her waist.

And they were kissing.

A timestamp appeared across the bottom of the image.

No one spoke.

Claire slowly lowered her glass.

Something changed in Mark’s face.

It wasn’t embarrassment.

It wasn’t remorse.

It was calculation.

And somehow that frightened me more than rage would have.

His eyes settled on me.

“Where did you get that?”

A short laugh escaped me.

Colder than I intended.

“That’s what you want to ask?”

“You’ve been spying on me?”

“Mark…” Rachel whispered.

He ignored her completely.

His eyes never left mine.

“Did you follow me?”

“No.”

“Then who took the picture?”

I pulled out the chair at the opposite end of the table and sat.

Apparently that was my place now.

“The hotel sent me a receipt.”

Claire glanced at Mark.

It lasted barely a second.

But I caught it.

And that was the first time I realized something important.

Claire didn’t know everything either.

Mark had been lying to both of us.

“The room was charged to our joint card,” I continued. “You told me you were meeting with a supplier.”

Mark shook his head immediately.

“That doesn’t prove anything.”

“I thought the same thing.”

He blinked.

Several guests shifted uncomfortably.

The tension in the room seemed to tighten by the second.

“So I called the hotel,” I continued. “They couldn’t tell me much because of privacy rules. Fair enough. But then I found something else.”

I reached into the folder beside me.

Claire had gone pale.

Mark’s voice dropped.

“Stop.”
