Five years after our divorce, my ex-husband spotted me across a crowded wedding reception in Charleston and smiled like he was looking at a chapter of his life he was still proud to have closed.

Drew Halston looked almost exactly the same.

Expensive suit.

Perfectly styled dark hair.

A watch on his wrist that probably cost more than the first car I ever owned.

Beside him stood Vanessa Crowley.

The woman he had left me for.

She wore a pale blue dress and rested one hand naturally on Drew’s arm, as though that place had belonged to her forever.

I already knew they would be at the wedding.

What surprised me was that Drew walked directly toward me.

“Well,” he said. “This is unexpected.”

I smiled politely.

“Hello, Drew.”

His eyes traveled over my burgundy dress and the small clutch in my hand.

Then came that familiar smile.

The same one that used to make me feel like I was being graded.

“You look… good, Maren.”

The pause before “good” said everything.

Vanessa smiled beside him.

“It’s been forever.”

“Five years.”

Drew laughed softly.

“Best five years of my life.”

Once, those words would have broken something inside me.

Now they barely landed.

“I’m glad things worked out for you.”

His smile weakened slightly.

Drew had always enjoyed winning most when he could see the other person losing.

And apparently, he had expected me to look like I had.

When I married Drew at twenty-eight, I confused confidence with character.

It took me years to understand the difference.

Drew was ambitious.

Charming.

Magnetic.

He could walk into a room full of strangers and leave with business cards, invitations, and someone offering him an opportunity.

At first, I admired that.

After our wedding, we moved to Charleston because Drew wanted to grow his financial consulting business.

I worked in regulatory compliance for a regional investment company.

My job wasn’t glamorous.

I reviewed contracts.

Transactions.

Internal procedures.

Documentation.

The sort of details most people would find painfully boring.

Drew used to joke about it.

“You spend your whole life looking for commas in contracts.”

I would laugh.

“And those commas keep companies out of trouble.”

At first, it felt harmless.

Then the teasing changed.

He started calling my salary “extra money,” even though I paid half the mortgage.

He questioned my purchases while buying expensive things for himself without mentioning them.

When I earned a promotion, he congratulated me over dinner.

Later that night, he asked whether the additional work would interfere with cooking.

I should have understood what that meant.

But when you love someone, warning signs have a strange way of looking temporary.

Vanessa entered our lives during the seventh year of our marriage.

She was a marketing consultant Drew hired for his company.

At first, her name came up casually.

Vanessa had a great campaign idea.

Vanessa knew an investor.

Vanessa recommended a restaurant.

Then Drew started coming home later.

His phone suddenly had a new password.

He began stepping outside to answer calls.

One Thursday, he told me he was driving to Savannah for a client dinner.

The next morning, I found a restaurant receipt inside his jacket.

The restaurant was twelve minutes from our house.

Dinner for two.

I didn’t confront him.

My profession had taught me something useful.

When something doesn’t make sense, arguing rarely makes it clearer.

Documentation does.

Three weeks later, I had enough.

I sat across from Drew at our kitchen island.

“How long have you been seeing Vanessa?”
