Beverly simply took her.<\/p>\n

The nurse had just placed Wren on my chest. She was tiny, furious, slippery, and perfect, and I was crying so hard I could barely see her.<\/p>\n

Roland stood beside the bed with his phone in his hand, taking pictures and sending messages.<\/p>\n

What I didn\u2019t know was that at 4:30, he had texted his mother to tell her we were close.<\/p>\n

I also didn\u2019t know she had already been sitting in the waiting room since three.<\/p>\n

The door opened.<\/p>\n

Beverly Tran walked in.<\/p>\n

Sixty-two years old.<\/p>\n

Silver hair perfectly styled.<\/p>\n

Pearls around her neck.<\/p>\n

At five in the morning.<\/p>\n

She crossed the room quickly and held out both arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, let Grandma see her.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nurse hesitated and looked at me.<\/p>\n

Before I could respond, Beverly lifted Wren from my chest.<\/p>\n

Just like that.<\/p>\n

The place where my daughter had been suddenly felt cold.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, she\u2019s definitely a Tran,\u201d Beverly said, carrying her toward the window. \u201cLook at that chin. Roland\u2019s chin. His father\u2019s too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she glanced at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe hardly looks like you at all, dear. Isn\u2019t that fortunate?\u201d<\/p>\n

Roland laughed.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

I lay in that hospital bed, exhausted and still recovering, watching my mother-in-law carry my six-minute-old daughter toward the window to show her the sunrise.<\/p>\n

\u201cRoland,\u201d I said quietly. \u201cCan I have her back?\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked at me.<\/p>\n

Then at his mother.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a minute, Simone. Mom waited all night.\u201d<\/p>\n

Beverly stayed for six hours.<\/p>\n

She held Wren for most of them.<\/p>\n

She told the nurses how the baby should be wrapped.<\/p>\n

She told me I was holding my own daughter incorrectly.<\/p>\n

She suggested formula before I\u2019d even had time to understand feeding.<\/p>\n

She told the lactation consultant that I was \u201coverly emotional\u201d and might need something to calm down.<\/p>\n

When she finally left, she kissed Roland on both cheeks.<\/p>\n

She kissed Wren on the forehead.<\/p>\n

For me, she gave a light pat on the foot through the blanket.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet some sleep,\u201d she said. \u201cYou look awful.\u201d<\/p>\n

After she left, Roland fell asleep in the chair beside the window.<\/p>\n

I held Wren in the darkness and checked my phone.<\/p>\n

There was one message I had been waiting for.<\/p>\n

One I wasn\u2019t sure would ever come.<\/p>\n

An hour earlier, I had sent a photo of Wren wrapped in the hospital\u2019s striped blanket.<\/p>\n

No words.<\/p>\n

Just the photograph.<\/p>\n

To a number I hadn\u2019t contacted in almost two years.<\/p>\n

At 6:14 a.m., my phone buzzed.<\/p>\n

Is she healthy?<\/p>\n
