We handled distribution for 30% of the Fortune 500, had transformed cold-chain logistics for pharmaceutical companies, and were three days away from closing the largest merger in our industry\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

But to my family, I worked at a grocery store.<\/p>\n

Most executives learned those things through spreadsheets and consultants.<\/p>\n

I learned by scanning barcodes and stocking shelves from midnight to 6 a.m.<\/p>\n

When my family asked about work during those early years, I told them I was in food retail or supply chain logistics.<\/p>\n

The rehearsal dinner the night before had been especially brutal.<\/p>\n

They were warm, accomplished people who clearly expected Marcus\u2019 family to be equally impressive.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, Emma,\u201d Patricia\u2019s brother, Jason, had asked during cocktails. \u201cMarcus mentioned you work in food service. Are you planning to open your own restaurant?\u201d<\/p>\n

Before I could respond, Marcus jumped in.<\/p>\n

The slight pause in conversation was painful.<\/p>\n

Jason recovered quickly. He was too polite to show surprise, but I saw Patricia\u2019s parents exchange a glance. They were clearly wondering how a family of doctors, lawyers, and successful business owners had produced someone whose greatest achievement appeared to be staying employed.<\/p>\n

\u201cFood retail is fascinating,\u201d I\u2019d said simply. \u201cThe logistics alone are incredibly complex.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure,\u201d Patricia\u2019s father had replied kindly, then immediately shifted the conversation to Marcus\u2019 law practice.<\/p>\n

Later, I overheard Patricia\u2019s mother talking to mine near the hotel bar.<\/p>\n

\u201cPatricia mentioned Emma might be a godmother to their children someday,\u201d she\u2019d said carefully.<\/p>\n

I left the bar after that and spent the rest of the evening in my room reviewing acquisition reports, wondering why I had thought attending this wedding was a good idea.<\/p>\n
