Dad\u2019s faded beach photograph had spent years in our junk drawer, though his thumb had worn one group of people nearly smooth. Two weeks after his death, a big package arrived from Honolulu with no return address. Mom saw the label, grabbed my wrist, and begged me to throw it away without opening it.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

I found Dad at the kitchen table with the photograph again.<\/p>\n

He kept it in the bottom drawer beside old batteries, takeout menus, and pens that barely worked.<\/p>\n

It showed a beach in Hawaii.<\/p>\n

The colors had faded until the ocean looked gray. Palm trees leaned into one corner, while several tiny figures stood near a cooler on the left side.<\/p>\n

Dad slowly turned the picture over in his hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s it like there?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

He looked up.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe rain is warm. You can smell the ocean before you see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom stood at the counter buttering toast.<\/p>\n

Her knife froze halfway across the bread.<\/p>\n

Dad noticed.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo,\u201d he said, setting the photograph down, \u201chow\u2019s work?\u201d<\/p>\n

That was Hawaii in our family.<\/p>\n

One moment it existed.<\/p>\n

The next, someone changed the subject.<\/p>\n

Dad had been born there and left at twenty. He moved to Oregon for work, met Mom, married her, and never returned.<\/p>\n

Not once.<\/p>\n

I never understood why.<\/p>\n

When I was little, he talked openly about missing Hawaii\u2014the rainstorms, fruit from roadside stands, and birds calling before sunrise.<\/p>\n

As I got older, though, I started noticing Mom\u2019s reaction whenever he mentioned it.<\/p>\n

She\u2019d go quiet.<\/p>\n

Sometimes she\u2019d leave the room.<\/p>\n

Once, after Dad said he\u2019d like to see the ocean there again, she put her plate in the sink so hard I thought it might crack.<\/p>\n

Later, I confronted him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy does Mom get angry every time you talk about Hawaii?\u201d<\/p>\n

Dad was folding a dish towel.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s not angry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe definitely is, Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

He gave me a weary look.<\/p>\n

\u201cTry to understand your mother, Annie. If you knew the whole story, you wouldn\u2019t be angry with her.\u201d<\/p>\n

I wish I\u2019d asked him what he meant.<\/p>\n
