On my wedding night, I crawled beneath the bed because I wanted to surprise my new husband.

It was ridiculous.

Childish, even.

But that stupid idea ended up protecting my apartment, my money, and probably years of my life.

My name is Mariana Salgado.

I was thirty-one years old, and only a few hours earlier, I had married Rodrigo Luján after dating him for two years.

Our reception ended a little after midnight at an elegant hotel in Polanco, Mexico City.

Rodrigo stayed downstairs to say goodbye to a few business associates.

I went up to the bridal suite alone, still wearing my wedding dress.

He had been drinking champagne all evening.

He was cheerful.

Relaxed.

Completely happy.

At least, that was what I thought.

Then I had an absurd idea.

I decided to hide beneath the bed, record Rodrigo’s reaction when he entered the room and realized I was missing, and save the video to show him on our first anniversary.

I switched on my phone camera.

Then I lowered myself onto the floor and squeezed beneath the bed.

My veil caught against the wooden frame.

I nearly laughed out loud trying to free it.

Then the door opened.

I immediately knew the footsteps weren’t Rodrigo’s.

High heels crossed the room.

A pair of burgundy shoes stopped inches from where I was hiding.

I recognized them.

My mother-in-law.

Patricia Luján.

She sat on the edge of the mattress directly above me.

My smile disappeared.

Patricia pulled out her phone.

A moment later, I heard Rodrigo’s voice through the speaker.

“Where are you?”

“In the service elevator,” he answered. “Mariana is probably still with her friends.”

Patricia laughed softly.

“She still doesn’t suspect anything?”

My chest tightened.

“No.”

There was a pause.

Then my new husband said something that changed everything.

“She still thinks the apartment was my wedding gift.”

I stopped breathing.

Three months before the wedding, we had purchased an apartment in Santa Fe for 6.4 million pesos.

The deed was entirely in my name.

Rodrigo had insisted on that.

He told me he wanted me to feel protected.

What Patricia did not know was that 4.7 million pesos had come from money my grandmother left me.

I temporarily transferred those funds into Rodrigo’s account because he claimed he could negotiate a better purchase arrangement with the seller.

I covered the remaining amount using my own savings.

Rodrigo had merely executed the final transfers.

Patricia lowered her voice.

“So now comes the difficult part.”

“Exactly.”

“When are you going to make her sign?”

“After the honeymoon.”

My heart started pounding.

Patricia asked, “Sign what?”

“A co-ownership agreement. After that, we can apply for a loan using the apartment as collateral.”

“Do you really think she’ll agree?”

Rodrigo laughed.

“Mariana will sign anything if I tell her it’s for our future.”

I closed my eyes.

Patricia continued.

“And what are you going to do with the loan?”

“Pay off the company’s debts. After that, we’ll figure something out.”

“And if the marriage falls apart?”

They both laughed.

Rodrigo answered first.

“Even better.”

“Better?”

“If I have enough paperwork, I can make it look like I paid for the apartment. The payment receipts are under my name.”

My fingers went numb around my phone.

Patricia said, “Her family won’t be able to fight much anyway. Her father still lives in that old apartment in Narvarte, doesn’t he?”

“Yeah.”

“So they obviously don’t have money for some huge legal battle.”

I bit down on my lip so hard I could taste blood.

The apartment in Narvarte had belonged to my grandmother.

My father had left most of it unchanged after she died.

And Rodrigo had no idea that my father, Arturo Salgado, was one of the founding partners of an industrial engineering company that worked with aerospace manufacturers in Querétaro.

My father drove an eleven-year-old car.

He wore discounted shirts.

He never displayed money.

And he could hire ten attorneys before breakfast if he ever needed to.

He simply believed wealth did not need an audience.

Patricia spoke again.

“You need to start immediately.”

“How?”

“Train her to ask for your permission.”

Silence.

Then Rodrigo said:

“That won’t be difficult.”

Tears filled my eyes.

But I didn’t cry.

I couldn’t risk making a sound.

My phone was still recording.

Patricia stood.

Before leaving, she gave him one last piece of advice.

“Don’t be too affectionate tonight. Confused women are easier to control.”

The door closed.

I remained beneath the bed for almost two full minutes.

Then I crawled out.

Dust covered the bottom of my dress.

My veil had torn.
