I took pride in being the person Greta could always depend on.<\/p>\n

So when she started acting strangely before summer camp, I convinced myself it was just nerves.<\/p>\n

She had been talking about camp since March.<\/p>\n

She packed her bag three days early.<\/p>\n

But that Tuesday morning, while stirring her cereal, she suddenly asked,<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, can parents pick kids up early if they feel sick?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess so. Why? Are you feeling okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked down.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah. I was just wondering.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two days later, she unpacked her duffel bag and repacked it twice.<\/p>\n

I assumed she was nervous about spending the night away from home for the first time.<\/p>\n

Then Saturday morning, the hospital called.<\/p>\n

Two nurses had called out, and they needed me in the ER earlier than expected.<\/p>\n

There was no way I could drive Greta forty minutes to camp and still make it to work on time.<\/p>\n

Greta stood in the doorway with her bag beside her.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s okay,\u201d she said quickly. \u201cI don\u2019t have to go. I can stay home.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, I thought she was trying to make things easier for me.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely not.\u201d<\/p>\n

I crouched in front of her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve been looking forward to this for weeks. You\u2019re not missing camp because I got called in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her chin trembled slightly, but she nodded.<\/p>\n

That was when Owen walked in.<\/p>\n

Owen had been one of my closest friends for years.<\/p>\n

He remembered Greta\u2019s birthday.<\/p>\n

He helped when my shifts ran late.<\/p>\n

He knew which kitchen cabinet always stuck.<\/p>\n

I trusted him more than almost anyone.<\/p>\n

He looked at the situation and immediately said,<\/p>\n

\u201cGo to work. I\u2019ll take her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOwen, camp is forty minutes in the opposite direction.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll take her. You go help your patients. I\u2019ve got this.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hugged Greta before leaving.<\/p>\n

She held onto me a little longer than usual.<\/p>\n

I noticed.<\/p>\n

But I was already late, so I kissed her forehead and ran.<\/p>\n

About an hour later, Owen texted me.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreta\u2019s checked in. She\u2019s excited. Everything\u2019s good.\u201d<\/p>\n

I finally relaxed.<\/p>\n

Then around noon, an unfamiliar number appeared on my phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cHello?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHi, this is Karen from Greta\u2019s summer camp. She\u2019s safe, but I need you to come here as soon as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a short pause.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt concerns the man who brought her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOwen?\u201d<\/p>\n

I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere must be some mistake. He\u2019s one of my closest friends.\u201d<\/p>\n

Karen\u2019s voice stayed serious.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think you should come.\u201d<\/p>\n

I drove to the camp imagining every terrible possibility.<\/p>\n

Karen met me outside and led me directly to her office.<\/p>\n

When she opened the door, Owen was sitting beside Greta.<\/p>\n

My daughter\u2019s eyes were swollen from crying.<\/p>\n

Her glasses rested on top of her head, and she was twisting the bottom of her shirt between her fingers.<\/p>\n
