Three days before my father was rushed into emergency surgery, he showed up at my house and asked me for $1,000.

That alone told me something was wrong.

Raymond Mercer was the kind of man who would repair something ten times before admitting he needed help.

For more than thirty years, he worked construction.

He carried lumber before sunrise.

Poured concrete in freezing weather.

Climbed roofs beneath brutal summer heat.

And somehow, no matter how little he had, he always found a way to give me more.

When I went to college, he quietly sold his motorcycle to help with tuition.

When I was a kid and needed decent school shoes, he sold the only good suit he owned.

He never told me either story.

Other relatives did.

That was Dad.

He sacrificed quietly and acted as though it had cost him nothing.

So when he stood in my kitchen with his hands clasped together and his eyes fixed on the floor, I knew this wasn’t about an ordinary bill.

“I need to borrow a thousand dollars,” he said.

Before I could ask why, my wife Natalie looked across the room.

“Tell him to get another job,” she said. “We’re not a bank.”

Dad didn’t argue.

That somehow made it worse.

His hands trembled slightly.

“That’s enough,” I told Natalie.

Then I took Dad outside.

The weather was warm, but he kept rubbing his palms together.

“I didn’t come here to cause trouble between you two,” he said. “If you can’t help, I understand.”

That nearly broke me.

This was the man who had spent his entire life helping me.

Now he was apologizing for asking once.

“What do you need the money for?”

He glanced toward the house.

“The money isn’t exactly for me.”

“What does that mean?”

“I need certified copies of some records. Legal help. And there’s a test I need done.”

I frowned.

“What records?”

He hesitated.

“Old adoption documents.”

I stared at him.

“Whose adoption?”

Again, his eyes moved toward the house.

Toward Natalie.

“I need proof before I explain everything.”

“Proof of what?”

He swallowed.

“Because otherwise someone might say I’m confused.”

Then he added quietly,

“Or accuse me of trying to interfere with your marriage.”

He never said Natalie’s name.

He didn’t need to.

“Dad, what is going on?”

Instead of answering, he placed one rough hand on my shoulder.

“I’m trying to give you something I should have given you a long time ago.”

There was something underneath his voice.

Urgency.

Maybe fear.

But this was also the man who had never made me prove I deserved his help.

So I decided not to make him prove why he deserved mine.

“I’ll get the money.”

Relief crossed his face.

“I’ll pay you back.”

“You don’t have to.”

I went into my office and opened the small safe beneath my desk.

As I counted the cash, Natalie appeared in the doorway.

“You’re really giving him the money?”

“Yes.”

“We agreed to discuss major expenses.”

“He has never asked me for money before.”

“That doesn’t mean it won’t become a habit.”

I turned toward her.

“He’s my father.”

“And this is our house.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Because years earlier, Dad had sold the last parcel of land he inherited from his mother and used most of the money for the down payment on that very house.

Natalie knew that.

I didn’t argue.

I simply handed Dad the money.

His fingers trembled around the envelope.

“I’m sorry, son.”

“You have nothing to apologize for.”

Usually Dad hugged me before leaving.

That afternoon, he didn’t.

For the next three days, I couldn’t stop thinking about everything he had said.

Certified documents.

Adoption records.

Legal help.

A test.

And most of all, the way he kept looking toward the house before answering my questions.

Then my phone rang.

“Is this Grant Mercer?”

“Yes.”

“I’m calling from the hospital. Raymond Mercer listed you as his emergency contact.”

I stood so quickly my chair rolled backward.

“What happened?”

“He collapsed this morning. Doctors discovered an aortic aneurysm and took him directly into emergency surgery.”

My mind went blank.

Dad had been standing in my backyard three days earlier.

Now surgeons were trying to save his life.

“Is he alive?”

“He was stable when he entered surgery.”

I held onto that word.

Stable.

Then she said something I wasn’t expecting.

“Before your father was sedated, he asked us to give you a sealed envelope.”

I froze.

“There is also an attorney here waiting to speak with you.”

“An attorney?”

“Yes. Priya Desai.”

Suddenly Dad’s strange request made more sense.

Legal help.

Certified copies.

Adoption files.

He hadn’t been considering doing something.

He had already started.

I grabbed my keys.

Then the woman stopped me.

“There’s one more thing.”

“What?”
