Rain hammered down in relentless sheets, soaking through my trench coat and leaving me chilled to the bone by the time I finally unlocked the heavy front door of my luxury downtown condo.<\/p>\n

I had just survived a brutal fourteen-hour day at the architectural firm, and throughout the miserable commute home, I had been thinking about only three things: a hot shower, a quiet evening, and the homemade dinner I had prepared before leaving that morning.<\/p>\n

Instead, the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted by the smell of cheap beer and greasy takeout filling the living room.<\/p>\n

My husband, Mark, was stretched across the sofa watching a game as though he had no concern in the world.<\/p>\n

His mother, Eleanor, and his sister, Chloe, were gathered around the kitchen island, talking loudly and laughing among themselves.<\/p>\n

My stomach growled painfully as I crossed into the kitchen, expecting to find the plate I had carefully covered and left on the counter.<\/p>\n

But what I saw made me stop cold.<\/p>\n

Eleanor was scraping the last pieces of my tenderloin steak, roasted vegetables, and garlic mashed potatoes into a large ceramic bowl.<\/p>\n

Without the slightest hesitation, she walked over to the corner where our golden retriever was sleeping, dumped the entire meal onto the floor, and watched as the dog eagerly began eating it.<\/p>\n

For several seconds, I could only stare at her.<\/p>\n

My jaw dropped as the reality of what she had just done sank in.<\/p>\n
