The card landed beneath a chair beside the check-in desk.<\/p>\n

For a moment, I watched it instead of him.<\/p>\n

I had worked extra enrollment shifts to put that money into my account.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe doctor ordered this scan,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I told you the insurance thing is a billing mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n

The receptionist kept one hand on the appointment sheet.<\/p>\n

When Gavin followed, she stopped beside the hallway.<\/p>\n

I had never been asked that with him standing there.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019d like Marlene.\u201d<\/p>\n

He made a short, disbelieving sound.<\/p>\n

Beth waited until I had my purse, then led us away.<\/p>\n

In the exam room, she checked my blood pressure and asked whether I was in pain.<\/p>\n

I told her what had happened and that the baby was moving normally.<\/p>\n

My obstetrician had ordered the scan because my measurements at the previous visit needed another look.<\/p>\n

The scan showed reassuring growth.<\/p>\n

Only when I heard my daughter\u2019s heartbeat did my hands stop trembling.<\/p>\n

I stared at the receipt.<\/p>\n

Gavin had told me his mother refused to contribute.<\/p>\n
