My mother collapsed in the snow while carrying the steaks my husband had ordered her to buy. “Did she remember them?” Daniel asked when I called from the emergency room. He had taken her phone, sent her into a blizzard despite her pneumonia, and still expected me to come home and cook. I was ready to confront him—until I saw my mother’s apartment building in his investor pitch.

My mother was found unconscious in the snow, a grocery bag frozen around her wrist. My husband’s first question was whether she had remembered the steaks.

The emergency room smelled of antiseptic and damp wool. I stood beside Mom’s bed while a nurse warmed her hands and monitored her breathing.

Three weeks after pneumonia, she still needed an inhaler just to cross a room. Yet Daniel had sent her six blocks through a blizzard because he wanted dinner for his business partner.

“She volunteered,” he said when I called. Glasses clinked in the background. “And don’t embarrass me in front of Marcus.”

I looked at the dark bruise around Mom’s wrist where the plastic bag had cut into her skin.

“She could have died.”

“She’s always dramatic. Come home and make yourself useful.”

For two years, Daniel had called my mother a guest while treating her like unpaid help.

He left dishes outside her room, woke her to iron his shirts, and complained when her coughing interrupted television.

I worked long hours at a property firm and believed him whenever he said Mom insisted on helping.

Mom, terrified of becoming a burden, never told me how much he expected from her.

That night, she finally did.

Before sending her outside, Daniel had taken her phone because, he claimed, she was “too distracted” to shop properly.

When she begged to order the groceries instead, he pointed toward the door.

“Earn your room, Evelyn.”

The nurse handed me Mom’s folded coat. The lining was soaked.

Inside one pocket was a grocery receipt, the ink blurred by melted snow.

She had bought everything Daniel requested, including the expensive steaks.

She collapsed on the way home.

“I’m sorry,” Mom whispered. “I thought if I kept him happy, you could keep your marriage.”

I kissed her forehead.

“You don’t owe him a marriage.”

Daniel’s next message arrived while she slept:

Marcus is investing tomorrow. Don’t let your mother’s stunt ruin this.

I almost replied.

Then I noticed the company name in the pitch deck Daniel had left open on our shared tablet:

Harbor House Living.

Below it was a photograph of the brick apartment building Mom had inherited from her sister.

Daniel had told me Marcus was investing in a restaurant.

Apparently, the plan had changed.

Mom’s building was managed by my firm.

I knew every lease, repair, and document connected to it.

Daniel knew only that the basement had once flooded and that Mom disliked paperwork.

I forwarded the deck to my attorney and set the tablet down.

Outside the hospital window, snow covered the road.

By morning, the tracks would be visible.
