I had watched Robert paint it.<\/p>\n

Arthur\u2019s voice came from behind me.<\/p>\n

I turned.<\/p>\n

He was holding two coffee mugs.<\/p>\n

I pointed toward the fireplace.<\/p>\n

His expression changed.<\/p>\n

For most of my adult life, I had taken care of other people.<\/p>\n

First my husband.<\/p>\n

Then our four children.<\/p>\n

Later, our grandchildren.<\/p>\n

I worked as a school secretary for thirty-two years.<\/p>\n

I packed lunches, picked up sick children, babysat whenever someone called, gave rides, helped with bills, and loaned money that rarely found its way back.<\/p>\n

After Robert died twelve years earlier, I somehow became even more useful.<\/p>\n

My children weren\u2019t bad people.<\/p>\n

But over time, they became used to the idea that I would always be available.<\/p>\n

Melissa\u2019s dentist appointment because I was watching her daughter.<\/p>\n

A reminder to transfer money to David.<\/p>\n

Errands.<\/p>\n

Appointments.<\/p>\n

Nothing on that calendar belonged to me.<\/p>\n
