The plane had already started taxiing when the engines suddenly dropped, the brakes hissed, and the captain stepped out of the cockpit asking for me by name.

That was the exact moment my stepmother’s confident smile disappeared in first class.

Two hours earlier, Patricia had shoved her crocodile handbag into my arms at Terminal 4 as if I worked for the airport.

“Careful with that, Nora,” she said, diamonds flashing under the terminal lights. “That bag costs more than your apartment.”

My father looked away.

That hurt more than anything Patricia said.

Not her tone.

Not my stepbrother Mason’s smug laugh.

Not even the way his fiancée recorded me struggling with three designer suitcases and two garment bags.

What hurt was watching my father pretend he hadn’t heard any of it.

We were flying from New York to Aspen for Mason’s engagement weekend.

Patricia had planned the whole thing like a royal event.

A private chalet.

A celebrity chef.

Snowmobile photos.

And a family announcement that Mason would soon join my father’s investment firm as a “future partner.”

I had only been invited at the last minute.

Invited.

Not wanted.

Three days earlier, Patricia had called and sighed,

“Your father insists you come. Just please don’t make things uncomfortable by talking about your little career problems.”

My “career problems” were what she called the two years after my mother died.

The years when I sold my condo.

Stopped attending family dinners.

And stopped correcting people when they assumed I had run out of money.

At check-in, Patricia collected four first-class boarding passes from the agent.

Then she handed me mine.

31B.

Economy.

I looked at her.

“Economy?”

Mason grinned.

“Come on, Nora. Builds character.”

Patricia leaned closer.

“First class is for people who contribute. You can still help with the luggage.”

The gate agent glanced at me.

Her eyes paused on my last name.

Maybe she recognized more than that.

I gave her the slightest shake of my head.

Not yet.

So I carried their bags.

I lifted Patricia’s coat into the overhead compartment.

Made sure Mason’s tuxedo bag lay flat so it wouldn’t wrinkle.

And smiled when Patricia loudly told another passenger,

“Nora has always been very useful when expectations are realistic.”

Then I walked back to seat 31B.

No one noticed the small silver aviation emblem inside my passport wallet.

No one noticed the message glowing on my phone.

**Bennett Aero Holdings: Board confirmed. Authority transfer effective immediately.**

And no one sitting in first class understood that the airline they were mocking me on had just come under my control.
