For a second, I honestly wondered whether grief had affected my hearing.<\/p>\n

Irene and I had celebrated our sixtieth anniversary only months earlier.<\/p>\n

We had raised three children.<\/p>\n

We had five grandchildren.<\/p>\n

And both believed they had divorced.<\/p>\n

Except the final decree had never been properly entered.<\/p>\n

Irene thought the marriage was finished.<\/p>\n

Then she met me.<\/p>\n

That part of our story I remembered perfectly.<\/p>\n

I first saw her in college.<\/p>\n

She was sitting three rows ahead of me, laughing with a friend.<\/p>\n

I stared long enough that she eventually caught me.<\/p>\n
