For weeks, my father had tried to convince Mom that she didn’t need the surgery.

So when I brought her home afterward and saw what he had done to their bedroom, I expected an argument.

Instead, Dad looked genuinely frightened.

And Mom immediately realized there was something he hadn’t told her.

For as long as I can remember, my mother had complained about her back.

By sixty, she couldn’t stand at the kitchen counter for very long without constantly shifting her weight.

By sixty-eight, even buying a bra had become exhausting.

She would order several.

Return all of them.

Then go back to wearing an old one that left deep marks across her shoulders.

So when she turned seventy, she finally decided to do something she had considered for decades.

She scheduled breast reduction surgery.

Dad hated the idea.

“You’re perfect exactly the way you are,” he kept telling her.

Mom would roll her eyes.

“I’m not doing this so you’ll find me prettier.”

“I know.”

“Then stop saying that.”

This wasn’t about trying to look younger.

She wanted to work in her garden without constant shoulder pain.

She wanted to cook dinner without needing to sit down halfway through.

She wanted whatever years remained to feel less like a daily negotiation with her own body.

The surgery went well.

At least, that was what I believed when I drove her home two days later.

Dad was waiting for us.

From the moment we arrived, he fussed over her.

He carried her bag.

Asked if she needed water.

Wanted to know whether the seat belt had bothered her incision.

Everything seemed normal.

Until we entered their bedroom.

Mom stopped in the doorway.

The large mirror above the dresser was gone.

So was the full-length mirror beside the closet.

Even the small vanity mirror she had owned since her twenties had disappeared.

“Brad?”

Dad came in behind us.

Mom gave a confused little laugh.

“What did you do?”

Dad hesitated.

“You probably shouldn’t look yet.”

“The surgeon already warned me there would be swelling.”

He shook his head.

“It isn’t the swelling.”

Something about his voice made me turn toward him.

He looked terrified.

Mom’s smile vanished.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

Dad glanced at me.

Then back at her.

“Your surgeon called while you were asleep.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why would he call you?” I asked.

“Your mother authorized the office to discuss her care with me.”

Mom stared at him.

“What did he say?”

Instead of answering immediately, Dad walked to the closet.

He reached onto the top shelf and pulled down an old shoebox.

The second Mom saw it, her expression changed.

“Where did you get that?”

Dad opened the box.

Then removed an old photograph.

Before Mom could take it, the doorbell rang.

A second later, someone started knocking hard.

Dad froze.

I went downstairs.

When I opened the door, Aunt Linda was standing on the porch.

She was Mom’s younger sister.

She lived almost an hour away, but she looked as though she had rushed out without thinking.
