He looked at me as though he could somehow explain everything away and whispered, “I thought I was protecting you.”

I didn’t scream.

I didn’t demand answers.

I packed his suitcase, placed it beside the front door, and told him to leave.

Then I noticed an envelope on the table.

My name was written across the front.

And it had been left there by the baby’s mother.

**Part 1**

I came home from New York three days earlier than planned.

I had changed my flight because I wanted to surprise my husband, Alex, after nearly two weeks apart.

Instead, I walked into our bedroom and froze.

Alex was asleep in our bed.

And resting against his bare chest was a newborn baby I had never seen before.

I was still wearing the soft blue dress from my business dinner.

My suitcase stood near the bedroom doorway.

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

The baby was wrapped in a lavender blanket.

On the nightstand were bottles.

Formula.

Diapers.

And in the corner sat a portable bassinet.

I pressed a hand over my mouth.

Alex opened his eyes.

The moment he saw me, all the color drained from his face.

“Lucia…”

I barely heard him.

My eyes were fixed on the baby.

More specifically, on the skin just beneath his left ear.

There was a small reddish birthmark shaped like a crescent.

I had the exact same mark.

My mother used to kiss mine when I was a child and call it “the angel’s footprint.”

It had faded over the years, but it was still visible in every childhood photograph I owned.

I stepped closer.

Then I studied the baby’s face.

His nose.

His upper lip.

His chin.

The room seemed to tilt.

“Why does that baby look like me?”

Alex slowly sat up, holding the infant with a familiarity that made something twist inside my chest.

“It’s not what you think.”

I stared at him.

“You spent years telling me there would never be secrets between us. There is a newborn in our bed, Alex. We are way past ‘it’s not what you think.’”

“I wasn’t unfaithful to you.”

I gave a bitter laugh.

“And you expect that to make this better?”

The baby stirred.

Alex gently rocked him.

“His name is Leo.”

“I didn’t ask his name.”

My voice shook.

“I asked who he is.”

Alex stayed silent for several long seconds.

Then he finally said,

“His mother was Sara Vidal.”

The name meant nothing to me.

“Who was she?”

“My foster sister.”

I frowned.

Alex had grown up in foster care in Chicago.

In nine years of marriage, he had always told me he had no meaningful connections left from that part of his childhood.

“You told me you were alone.”

“I was.”

“Don’t play with words.”

Alex lowered his eyes.
