I picked Noah up from kindergarten a couple of afternoons each week and brought him to my house until his parents finished work.<\/p>\n

Those drives were some of my favorite times with him.<\/p>\n

Noah could talk endlessly.<\/p>\n

Dinosaurs.<\/p>\n

Classroom drama.<\/p>\n

What someone had packed for lunch.<\/p>\n

That afternoon, he was strapped into his car seat when his voice suddenly dropped to a whisper.<\/p>\n

I smiled at him through the rearview mirror.<\/p>\n

He leaned forward as much as the straps allowed.<\/p>\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n

But Noah looked completely serious.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s in the garage.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s in the garage?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not supposed to tell you. Dad said nobody can know until it\u2019s ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shook my head.<\/p>\n

Noah had never been good at keeping surprises.<\/p>\n

One Christmas, he announced the contents of nearly every wrapped present before breakfast.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid Dad say anything else?\u201d<\/p>\n

Noah picked at the strap across his chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom said, \u2018What are we going to do if she finds out?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

My smile disappeared.<\/p>\n

He pointed directly at me.<\/p>\n

My hands tightened slightly around the steering wheel.<\/p>\n

My daughter Emma liked to joke that I could turn the smallest suspicious detail into a full investigation before anyone finished explaining.<\/p>\n

Maybe she was right.<\/p>\n

Noah described a red light glowing inside the garage.<\/p>\n

He had heard his parents whispering.<\/p>\n

He had also seen Emma carrying a package home from a flea market.<\/p>\n

She took it straight into the garage and told him not to touch it.<\/p>\n

He shook his head.<\/p>\n

I tried to laugh.<\/p>\n

Then I remembered something.<\/p>\n

The week before, Emma had casually asked whether I still kept belongings from when I was young.<\/p>\n
