Thatcher was supposed to be in Raleigh.<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

He sat fifteen feet away in the lobby bar of the Ballantyne Hotel in Charlotte, beside my business partner, his hand behind her chair.<\/p>\n

Then he leaned over and kissed her hair.<\/p>\n

I stood behind a white stone pillar near the entrance, keys in one hand and phone in the other. I could see his wedding ring, Claudine\u2019s dark green scarf over her chair, and the familiar crease beside Thatcher\u2019s mouth whenever he was pleased.<\/p>\n

On my screen were still the words Raleigh traffic is brutal.<\/p>\n

It was our third wedding anniversary.<\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t planned to be there. I expected to spend the evening at Bloom & Co., my floral and event design studio on South Tryon Street, finishing a centerpiece mock-up for the Morrison wedding. Thatcher had told me three days earlier that a client meeting in Raleigh would keep him away until after ten.<\/p>\n

I was disappointed, not suspicious.<\/p>\n

That had become a pattern in our marriage.<\/p>\n

A client changed everything.<\/p>\n

At four that afternoon, she called from a corporate reception at the Ballantyne and asked me to bring the samples there instead of meeting the next morning.<\/p>\n

I agreed.<\/p>\n

My mother had taught me that when someone trusted you with an important day, you found a way to make it work. So I loaded two arrangements into my car, brushed eucalyptus from my linen shirt, and drove across town.<\/p>\n

I never delivered them.<\/p>\n

I was still holding my keys when I saw Thatcher.<\/p>\n

Claudine sat close enough that their knees nearly touched. I knew her posture like my own handwriting\u2014chin lowered, eyes lifted, a half-smile that made the other person feel like no one else existed.<\/p>\n

I had seen her use it on nervous brides, skeptical hotel managers, and corporate clients resisting our prices.<\/p>\n

We used to joke about it.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re the closer,\u201d I would tell her.<\/p>\n

After Friday-night cleanup, she would raise her wineglass and say, \u201cThat\u2019s why you keep me around.\u201d<\/p>\n

I had done more than that.<\/p>\n

I had made her a partner.<\/p>\n

Two years earlier, when Bloom & Co. grew faster than I could manage alone, I gave Claudine a minority stake. She brought in corporate accounts, worked well with hotel managers, and could enter a room of strangers and leave with three business cards and a lunch meeting.<\/p>\n

Looking back, there had been signs.<\/p>\n

Claudine sometimes complained that being a minority partner meant doing \u201cowner-level work without owner-level control.\u201d Meanwhile, Thatcher increasingly asked whether I had considered selling Bloom while regional event companies were fetching high valuations.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve already proven you can build something,\u201d he said once over dinner. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to die behind a flower cooler just to prove you love the business.\u201d<\/p>\n

I thought he was worried about me.<\/p>\n
