My father had barely been laid to rest when my husband began talking about how to spend his money.

Standing beside Dad’s coffin beneath a gray, rain-heavy sky, Ethan leaned toward me and whispered, “At least now your inheritance can finally solve some of this family’s problems.”

I kept my eyes on the casket.

Something inside me became completely still.

Ethan’s mother, Marjorie, stood nearby pressing a lace handkerchief to eyes that were perfectly dry. During the funeral, she had sobbed louder than almost anyone, which was interesting considering she had once described my father as “a stubborn mechanic sitting on property he never deserved.”

Now, with a diamond bracelet sparkling on her wrist, she accepted condolences as though they were gifts meant for her.

“You poor dear,” she told one of Dad’s longtime church friends. “Lydia is heartbroken, naturally. But George was always practical. He would want his estate handled sensibly.”

Sensibly.

I already knew what that word meant to Marjorie.

It meant paying off Ethan’s brother Caleb’s failing restaurant.

It meant clearing Marjorie’s credit card balances.

And apparently, it meant buying the $600,000 colonial home she had already toured twice.

A house with white columns, black shutters, and a glass sunroom Marjorie had called “perfect for starting over.”

I knew because I had seen the real-estate listing open on Ethan’s laptop the night before the funeral.

He hadn’t even tried to hide it.

At the luncheon afterward, Ethan lowered himself into the chair beside me while relatives laughed and talked near the buffet.

“The will reading is tomorrow at ten,” he said quietly. “Please don’t embarrass me by falling apart.”

I slowly turned toward him.

“My father died four days ago.”

“And my family has been drowning in debt for years.”

His smile remained pleasant because people were watching us.

Beneath the table, his fingers closed hard around my wrist.

“You’re my wife,” he murmured. “What belongs to you belongs to us.”

Marjorie appeared at my other side, wrapped in perfume that smelled like powder and roses.

“Sweetheart,” she said gently, “grief can make women impulsive. Let Ethan manage the financial decisions for a while.”

I looked from her hand patting my shoulder to Ethan’s fingers still gripping my wrist.

For three years, they had mistaken my silence for weakness.

Because I kept the books for Dad’s auto-supply business, wore inexpensive clothes, and drove his old blue pickup, they assumed I knew nothing about contracts, debt, investments, property, or manipulation.

Dad had known better.

And more importantly, he had known exactly what kind of people they were.

Two months before his heart finally gave out, Dad asked me to bring him every bank statement, deed, business record, and security file connected to the company.

Then he placed his old phone in my hand.

“If I’m gone before I finish this,” he said, “give that phone to Martin Shaw. Not Ethan. Not his mother. Martin.”

Martin Shaw was Dad’s attorney.

So at the luncheon, I calmly pulled my wrist from Ethan’s hand, folded my napkin, and stood.

“I’ll be there at ten.”

Ethan smiled.

He thought I had surrendered.
