I buried my husband, and no one knew that during that same week, I had bought a ticket for a year-long cruise. When my son dumped three cages in my living room as if I were his servant, I knew my mourning had reached its limit.

My daughter-in-law didn’t even greet me. She pushed the cages onto my rug and said, “There are your instructions.” I smiled. By sunrise, when my ship left Miami, my disappearance was going to turn their lives upside down.

The house still carried the scent of funeral lilies and candle wax when Austin walked in without knocking.

Ernest had been gone only a week.

I buried him on a gray Tuesday in his favorite white linen shirt, his rosary between his hands and our little Key West photograph tucked into his pocket like one last private memory.

For seven days, I cried until my eyes ached.

On day eight, I bought the cruise ticket.

Not for drama.

After forty years of serving as everyone’s emergency fund, nurse, cook, driver, babysitter, backup plan, and place to unload their problems, I finally understood something.

Grief was heavy.

Being used was heavier.

When Ernest became ill, I sold the wedding earrings he had given me to pay for his medicine.

When Austin lost his job, I emptied my savings because he said he only needed temporary help.

When Chloe had her baby, I spent three months sleeping on their couch and waking for bottles while she told everyone I was “so lucky to have purpose.”

Yet at Ernest’s funeral, my son didn’t embrace me.

He looked past the cemetery dirt on my shoes and asked, “Mom, have you thought about what you’re going to do with the house?”

I carried that question with me all week.

So when Austin returned in a new shirt and dark sunglasses, speaking with the demanding tone Chloe had encouraged, I already understood what he had become.

“Mom, we’re going away to the Bahamas for a few days.”

“That’s nice, son.”

“You’re going to watch the pets.”

Chloe followed him inside carrying three cages.

Two parakeets shrieked from one.

A white rabbit shook inside another.

The cat flattened itself against the back of an old carrier as though even it understood it had been delivered to the wrong place.

Chloe set all three beside Ernest’s memorial photograph.

No flowers.

No embrace.

Not even “How are you holding up?”

Only animals, food, and instructions.

“Change the water for the parakeets twice a day,” Chloe said, still staring at her phone.

“Don’t give the rabbit lettuce. The cat gets stressed, so don’t let him out. And make sure to clean up properly because it smells awful afterward.”

I stared at her.

“Chloe, I just buried my husband.”
