Everyone rearranges their lives around her heartbreak.<\/p>\n

Apartment problems?<\/p>\n

There\u2019s always a couch waiting.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, if I forget to return a phone call quickly enough, I get lectured about being distant.<\/p>\n

I learned years ago that arguing about the favoritism accomplished nothing.<\/p>\n

So I kept some emotional distance.<\/p>\n

I showed up to family dinners.<\/p>\n

Smiled when necessary.<\/p>\n

Lily has her own bedroom.<\/p>\n

Alyssa\u2019s comment didn\u2019t bother me because I believed it.<\/p>\n

It bothered me because she deliberately said it in front of my daughter.<\/p>\n

Mom gave one of those nervous little laughs she always uses when Alyssa goes too far.<\/p>\n
