I finished tying the garbage bag and turned toward them.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Evelyn stood there in her usual pressed blouse as if she had somewhere important to be. My dad, Richard, stood behind her with his arms crossed, posture straight, still carrying himself like the colonel title had never retired with him.<\/p>\n

Neither was smiling.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re back earlier than we expected,\u201d Evelyn said.<\/p>\n

I blinked slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told you my return date,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

She waved that away like deployment schedules and time zones were optional suggestions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, things changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course they had.<\/p>\n

I lifted one of the garbage bags slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d I said. \u201cI can see that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard stepped forward, not aggressively, just enough to take up space.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe needed to make some adjustments while you were gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adjustments.<\/p>\n

That word carried a lot of weight in this house.<\/p>\n

I looked past them into the living room. The furniture had been rearranged. New throw pillows. A framed photo I didn\u2019t recognize.<\/p>\n

None of it was mine.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere\u2019s Chloe?\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

Evelyn finally smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, she\u2019s here upstairs resting.\u201d<\/p>\n

Resting.<\/p>\n

That told me enough.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd Vance?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoved in.\u201d<\/p>\n

My duffel still sat on the porch behind me like it hadn\u2019t gotten the message.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd my room?\u201d I asked.<\/p>\n

Evelyn tilted her head like she was explaining something obvious.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, honey, Chloe needed the master suite.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of course she did.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s been under a lot of stress,\u201d Evelyn continued. \u201cYou know how sensitive she is.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yeah.<\/p>\n

Sensitive enough to need a king-size bed that wasn\u2019t hers.<\/p>\n

I nodded once.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, where am I sleeping?\u201d<\/p>\n

Richard answered.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve got options,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Options.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe basement is available,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

They had moved in last month.<\/p>\n

Not visiting.<\/p>\n

Not temporarily.<\/p>\n

Moved in.<\/p>\n

\u201cOr you can head back to the barracks on base. Might be easier with your schedule anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

An unfinished basement with a cold concrete floor and half-installed drywall, or return to base like deployment had never ended.<\/p>\n

Those were my options.<\/p>\n

Evelyn stepped closer, using her soft public voice.<\/p>\n
