That evening, I searched for the flight.<\/p>\n

Flight 212 still existed.<\/p>\n

Boston to San Francisco.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat seat was comfortable,\u201d I said. \u201cYou\u2019d have room. You could rest. Now you\u2019re going to spend six hours squeezed into economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll survive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe seats barely recline.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t need them to.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandma.\u201d<\/p>\n

She patted my wrist.<\/p>\n

\u201cSam, what you did for me was incredibly generous. I know how hard you worked for those tickets. I know every extra shift represented another piece of this trip.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her clear blue eyes met mine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why move?\u201d<\/p>\n

She hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause sometimes comfort isn\u2019t the most important thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

First class began boarding.<\/p>\n

I looked at my ticket for 3B.<\/p>\n

Then a businessman in a gray suit dropped into it while talking on his phone.<\/p>\n

He never looked out the window.<\/p>\n

I kept twisting around, trying to see into economy.<\/p>\n

A curtain blocked everything.<\/p>\n

As we climbed above Boston, I imagined Grandma all the way back in row 34.<\/p>\n
