The alarm went off at five in the morning.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

For once, I didn\u2019t hit snooze.<\/p>\n

I reached over, shut it off before it could beep again, and slipped quietly out of bed.<\/p>\n

Daniel was still asleep beside me, one arm across his face, breathing deeply.<\/p>\n

I pulled on yesterday\u2019s gray sweatshirt, tiptoed across the old wooden floor, avoided the board near the door that always creaked, and went downstairs.<\/p>\n

The house was still dark.<\/p>\n

Outside the kitchen window, the lake looked like a sheet of black glass.<\/p>\n

No wind.<\/p>\n

No birds.<\/p>\n

Just the low hum of my mother\u2019s old refrigerator.<\/p>\n

My mother\u2019s kitchen.<\/p>\n

That mattered to me much more that morning than it had a week earlier.<\/p>\n

Mom owns a little cabin by the lake.<\/p>\n

Nothing luxurious.<\/p>\n

Two stories.<\/p>\n

Cedar siding.<\/p>\n

A green metal roof.<\/p>\n

A screened porch.<\/p>\n

A wooden deck overlooking the water.<\/p>\n

Three bedrooms upstairs and one bathroom everyone complains about sharing.<\/p>\n

The kitchen still has orange countertops from the late seventies, and the living-room couch is older than I am.<\/p>\n

My father bought the place the year I was born.<\/p>\n

He paid for it after saving money from years of overtime at the paper mill.<\/p>\n

He used to say it was the only thing he ever bought that became worth more to him every year.<\/p>\n

Dad died when I was nineteen.<\/p>\n

A heart attack.<\/p>\n

Right there on the dock while fishing.<\/p>\n

Afterward, Mom almost sold the cabin.<\/p>\n

She couldn\u2019t bear being there.<\/p>\n

For two summers, she stayed away completely.<\/p>\n

Then one June morning, she called me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I\u2019m going to open the lake house.\u201d<\/p>\n

And she did.<\/p>\n

Two summers ago, she climbed a ladder and painted all the shutters blue by herself.<\/p>\n

I yelled at her for a week for doing it without help.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father always wanted blue,\u201d she told me.<\/p>\n

That was Mom.<\/p>\n

Daniel and I got married that spring.<\/p>\n

May.<\/p>\n

Small church ceremony.<\/p>\n

Barn reception.<\/p>\n

String lights.<\/p>\n

Taco truck.<\/p>\n

Nothing fancy.<\/p>\n

That summer was the first time our families really spent extended time together.<\/p>\n

And the first time Daniel\u2019s parents, Susan and Richard, visited the lake cabin, Mom was more nervous than I had ever seen her.<\/p>\n

She called me every night for a week.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do they like to eat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, normal food.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes Susan drink tea or coffee?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCoffee, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAny allergies?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot that I know of.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat kind of pillows does Richard prefer?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMom. I have absolutely no idea what kind of pillow my father-in-law likes.\u201d<\/p>\n

That didn\u2019t stop her.<\/p>\n

She drove into the city and bought brand-new sheets for the guest room.<\/p>\n

Four-hundred-thread-count.<\/p>\n

Pale blue.<\/p>\n

New towels.<\/p>\n

Fluffy white ones.<\/p>\n

She even put together a little basket in the bathroom with miniature soaps, lotions, and a candle.<\/p>\n

Like a hotel.<\/p>\n

She scrubbed the entire cabin.<\/p>\n

Washed every window.<\/p>\n

Had the carpets professionally cleaned.<\/p>\n

When I arrived the Friday before everyone else, I found her on her knees scrubbing baseboards with a toothbrush.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, what are you doing?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want everything to be nice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is nice. It\u2019s a lake cabin. Nobody expects perfection.\u201d<\/p>\n
