The photographer slowly lowered his camera, clearly uncomfortable with what he had just been asked to do.<\/p>\n

I looked straight at my mother, waiting for her to correct them.<\/p>\n

Instead, she touched her necklace and said, \u201cJust for this one, Clara. You understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

I did.<\/p>\n

Completely.<\/p>\n

It was Mom\u2019s sixtieth birthday, one of those celebrations she repeatedly claimed she never wanted while somehow spending eight months organizing every detail.<\/p>\n

A rented ballroom.<\/p>\n

White roses everywhere.<\/p>\n

Champagne towers.<\/p>\n

A live jazz trio.<\/p>\n

A three-tier cake covered in gold leaf.<\/p>\n

Every piece of the event had passed through me. I approved it, arranged it, and quietly paid for it because Mom said asking my brothers for financial help made her uncomfortable.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have families,\u201d she said. \u201cYou\u2019re good with money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Apparently, being good with money meant stepping in when the venue demanded its $40,000 balance.<\/p>\n

It meant paying the caterer.<\/p>\n

The florist.<\/p>\n

The photographer.<\/p>\n

Mom\u2019s custom dress.<\/p>\n

Even hotel rooms for relatives who later walked past me in the lobby as though I barely existed.<\/p>\n

But being good with money apparently did not make me family.<\/p>\n

At least not once someone pulled out a camera.<\/p>\n

My oldest brother, Ryan, gestured toward an empty section of wall.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on, Clara. Don\u2019t make it weird. Mom wants a bloodline picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bloodline.<\/p>\n

I had joined this family when I was four years old, after my birth parents died and Mom\u2019s sister begged her to take me in.<\/p>\n

Dad never treated me differently.<\/p>\n

He taught me how to ride a bike.<\/p>\n

He called me his miracle girl.<\/p>\n

Every Christmas, he wrote my name on my stocking himself.<\/p>\n

Mom never directly told me that I wasn\u2019t really hers.<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t have to.<\/p>\n

She preferred smaller reminders.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour brothers inherited Dad\u2019s eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFamily medical history is complicated with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re lucky we chose you.\u201d<\/p>\n

After Dad died, those little reminders stopped being subtle.<\/p>\n

And now Mom sat beneath a crystal chandelier surrounded by the sons who forgot to refill her prescriptions, skipped her medical appointments, and called me whenever there was a roof repair or unexpected bill.<\/p>\n

The photographer cleared his throat.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am, are you sure?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mom gave him a polished smile.<\/p>\n
