Arthur\u2019s mother, Evelyn, asked where my parents lived.<\/p>\n

\u201cKansas,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSmall town?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded sympathetically, as though poverty were an illness.<\/p>\n

Arthur\u2019s father, Charles, asked, \u201cAnd your consulting work\u2014does it pay reliably?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEnough.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arthur smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe doesn\u2019t care about money.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cI care about character.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something flickered in his eyes for half a second.<\/p>\n

Then he laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo serious.\u201d<\/p>\n

His sister, Madison, spent twenty minutes discussing her new apartment before noticing my handbag.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat brand is cute,\u201d she said. \u201cIs it vintage?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s old.\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t mention that it had been custom-made in Milan.<\/p>\n

During dessert, Charles turned the conversation to business.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur family company is expanding aggressively,\u201d he announced.<\/p>\n

Arthur leaned back proudly.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re closing a major financing deal soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

I slowly raised my wineglass.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith whom?\u201d<\/p>\n

Arthur grinned.<\/p>\n

\u201cNorthbridge Capital Partners.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost laughed from disbelief.<\/p>\n

Northbridge Capital Partners was the investment division I had founded two years earlier.<\/p>\n

Charles continued, \u201cTheir founder is notoriously private, but once they approve us, we\u2019ll be positioned for huge growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSounds important,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is,\u201d Evelyn replied. \u201cThat kind of world is probably difficult to understand if you didn\u2019t grow up around business.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arthur squeezed my hand beneath the table.<\/p>\n

I nearly laughed again.<\/p>\n

At 9:17 p.m., my phone vibrated.<\/p>\n

Nina.<\/p>\n

I excused myself.<\/p>\n

Her message contained four attachments.<\/p>\n

The Wells family business was in even worse condition than I expected.<\/p>\n

Wells Development had overextended itself. Two projects were delayed, and one lender had already rejected refinancing.<\/p>\n

Their proposed Northbridge deal wasn\u2019t financing for expansion.<\/p>\n

It was keeping them alive.<\/p>\n

Then I found the second surprise.<\/p>\n

Arthur had personally guaranteed several company debts.<\/p>\n

Without refinancing, he could face millions in exposure.<\/p>\n

I stared at my screen.<\/p>\n

They weren\u2019t simply hiding their financial problems from the supposedly poor woman Arthur planned to marry.<\/p>\n

They intended to bring me into that mess without telling me.<\/p>\n

Nina called.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s more,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYour fianc\u00e9 met with a family attorney three weeks ago. They drafted a prenup.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s normal.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis one isn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

She explained the terms.<\/p>\n

The agreement tried to classify nearly all future income connected to Wells family businesses as separate property while using broad language to make household liabilities shared.<\/p>\n

It was aggressive.<\/p>\n

And heavily one-sided.<\/p>\n

I returned to dinner.<\/p>\n

Arthur smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything okay?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPerfect.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charles raised his glass.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo family.\u201d<\/p>\n

I lifted mine.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo transparency.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evelyn looked at me strangely.<\/p>\n

Then Arthur reached inside his jacket.<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually have something.\u201d<\/p>\n

He removed a folder.<\/p>\n

My pulse stayed steady.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy parents think we should handle some practical things before the wedding.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pushed it toward me.<\/p>\n

The prenup.<\/p>\n

Madison smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cNothing romantic about paperwork, right?\u201d<\/p>\n

Arthur touched my wrist.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust sign it when you\u2019ve had time. Standard stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

I opened the folder, slowly reviewed several pages, then closed it.<\/p>\n

\u201cSure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Evelyn visibly relaxed.<\/p>\n

That was when I realized how completely they believed they had found the perfect victim.<\/p>\n

They had no idea their financial future was already sitting in my inbox.<\/p>\n
