\u201cNo. Why?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur financing meeting got canceled.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat sounds inconvenient.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cVery.\u201d<\/p>\n

Voices murmured behind him.<\/p>\n

Then Charles took the phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cClaire, Arthur says you work in consulting. Do you know anyone in finance?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked through the window of my forty-second-floor office.<\/p>\n

\u201cA few people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNorthbridge pulled out without explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure they had a reason.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence followed.<\/p>\n

That evening, Arthur arrived at my apartment furious.<\/p>\n

I folded my hands.<\/p>\n

For the first time since we met, Arthur obeyed without arguing.<\/p>\n

Beside it, I placed another folder containing debt summaries, project exposure reports, and the refinancing proposal.<\/p>\n

The color disappeared from Arthur\u2019s face.<\/p>\n

He frowned.<\/p>\n

I slid one last document across the table.<\/p>\n

Northbridge Logistics Solutions.<\/p>\n

Founder and majority shareholder: Claire Bennett.<\/p>\n

Arthur stared at my name.<\/p>\n

Then me.<\/p>\n

Then the document again.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

His mouth fell open.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou own Northbridge?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI own the company that owns Northbridge Capital Partners.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arthur jumped up so quickly his chair scraped backward.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard you at the restaurant.\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression changed.<\/p>\n

I repeated his own words quietly.<\/p>\n
