Popcorn doesn\u2019t simply fall out of hair like mine.<\/p>\n

It moves in permanently.<\/p>\n

On the giant screen, Spider-Man was swinging between buildings while hundreds of people cheered.<\/p>\n

Behind me, a nine-year-old boy was laughing at the top of his lungs.<\/p>\n

Beside me, my husband Owen stared at the side of my head.<\/p>\n

He reached over and carefully pulled a piece of popcorn from my curls.<\/p>\n

He held it between two fingers.<\/p>\n

Then he looked at me.<\/p>\n

Something changed in his face.<\/p>\n

I had never seen that expression before.<\/p>\n

He placed the popcorn on the armrest as carefully as though it were evidence.<\/p>\n

And what it had taken for us to get inside that theater at all.<\/p>\n

Owen is thirty-eight years old and one of the gentlest people I have ever known.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t mean weak.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s six-foot-two, works construction, and can carry a sheet of drywall up a staircase by himself.<\/p>\n

But he avoids confrontation almost instinctively.<\/p>\n

On our third date, he ordered a medium-rare steak.<\/p>\n

It arrived completely overcooked.<\/p>\n

He looked disappointed for half a second.<\/p>\n

At first, I thought it was sweet.<\/p>\n

It was fear.<\/p>\n

During our eight years of marriage, I watched Owen accept the wrong drive-through order more times than I could count.<\/p>\n

He paid for an unnecessary car repair rather than challenge the mechanic.<\/p>\n

He loaned his sister Lisa two thousand dollars even though both of us knew she probably wouldn\u2019t repay it.<\/p>\n

When our neighbor built a fence several feet onto our property, Owen looked at it and said,<\/p>\n
