After four years of failed treatments, I thought I\u2019d learned how to handle awkward comments, forced sympathy, and cruel jokes about my infertility. Then, at my thirty-fifth birthday dinner, my mother-in-law handed me a velvet jewelry box and smiled as if she\u2019d finally found the perfect gift.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

My husband, Thomas, and I had been trying to have a baby for four years when I turned thirty-five.<\/p>\n

By then, I could give myself an injection without even looking.<\/p>\n

Hope no longer felt like optimism. It had become more like a habit I couldn\u2019t quite force myself to give up.<\/p>\n

I knew which clinic rooms had the least uncomfortable chairs. I knew which nurses became unnaturally cheerful after bad news. And I knew exactly how long it usually took Thomas to reach for my hand after a doctor said the word \u201cunlikely.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019d also learned to read his expression before he said anything, especially after appointments.<\/p>\n

The worst appointment came six months before my birthday.<\/p>\n

We had already gone through two rounds of IVF.<\/p>\n

Both had failed.<\/p>\n

The specialist folded her hands on the desk.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to tell you something impossible,\u201d she said. \u201cBut based on everything we\u2019ve seen, carrying a pregnancy will be extremely difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thomas squeezed my fingers.<\/p>\n

Sometimes the smallest gesture from him meant more than an entire conversation.<\/p>\n

I stared at a framed photograph of a sailboat hanging behind the doctor\u2019s shoulder because I knew that if I looked at Thomas or the doctor, I would start crying.<\/p>\n

On the drive home, Thomas said, \u201cWe don\u2019t have to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n

So we didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

That night, I deleted three baby apps from my phone.<\/p>\n

For a while, I stopped attending baby showers too.<\/p>\n

Thomas understood.<\/p>\n

His mother did not.<\/p>\n

Susan knew everything.<\/p>\n

Not some vague or softened version of what we were going through.<\/p>\n

Everything.<\/p>\n

She knew about the failed transfers, the medication, the specialist, all of it.<\/p>\n

And somehow, knowing exactly how painful it was made her more comfortable joking about it.<\/p>\n

Susan had a particular talent for making cruelty sound almost conversational.<\/p>\n

Whenever a cousin announced a pregnancy, she\u2019d glance in my direction.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome women are just luckier than others.\u201d<\/p>\n
