I thought the summer had brought my family closer. But after my grandkids went home, one small discovery made me question what had really been happening behind the scenes. The more I learned, the more I realized love could hide things just as easily as fear.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

My grandson had carried the same little green backpack around my house for two months\u2014to breakfast, the park, movie nights, everywhere.<\/p>\n

Once, I moved it three feet so I could vacuum, and nine-year-old Ben appeared beside me before I\u2019d even plugged the vacuum in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll take it, Grandma.\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019d laughed then.<\/p>\n

The morning he went home, nobody was laughing.<\/p>\n

My son, Adam, and his wife, Tara, had driven four hours to collect Ben and his seven-year-old sister, Sophie.<\/p>\n

They\u2019d asked me to keep the kids all summer because they were renovating their house.<\/p>\n

\u201cToo much dust,\u201d Adam had explained in June. \u201cWe don\u2019t want them breathing that stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hadn\u2019t needed convincing.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m 65, and two months with my grandkids sounded less like a favor and more like winning something.<\/p>\n

We baked cookies, walked to the park, watched movies on my couch, and debated whether popcorn counted as dinner.<\/p>\n

Sophie talked enough for three people.<\/p>\n

Ben was quieter and thoughtful, the kind of child who noticed when my grocery bags looked heavy and grabbed one without being asked.<\/p>\n

That morning, I was making pancakes when Adam walked into the kitchen.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre they ready?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAlmost. They need to eat first; you all do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tara came in behind him and wrapped both hands around the coffee mug I handed her.<\/p>\n

She looked tired.<\/p>\n

Adam looked worse.<\/p>\n
