The night before I was due to receive an award, my MIL cut my ceremonial gown into pieces. \u201cWho else is going to serve dinner tomorrow?\u201d she said. My husband glanced at the ruined dress and smirked. \u201cYou\u2019re a wife, not a celebrity. Act like one.\u201d I didn\u2019t argue. The following night, they turned on the TV\u2014and discovered who was presenting my award.<\/strong><\/h1>\n

When I asked what had happened, Patricia looked at me as calmly as if I\u2019d asked where she kept the salt.<\/p>\n

Then she said, \u201cNow you won\u2019t need it.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

She lowered the scissors.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou heard me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stepped inside and lifted part of the skirt from the floor. The gown had cost $1,400, more than I had ever spent on a dress. I\u2019d debated the purchase for 3 weeks. Mark called it ridiculous. Patricia called it a little showy.<\/p>\n

I bought it anyway.<\/p>\n

It was fitted at the waist, simple at the shoulders, and not flashy. Just one beautiful thing I wanted for one important night.<\/p>\n

Now it looked like somebody had lost a fight with a fabric store.<\/p>\n

Patricia, I said slowly.<\/p>\n

Why did you cut my dress?<\/p>\n

She gave me the look she used whenever she thought I was being deliberately dense.<\/p>\n

Who else is going to serve dinner tomorrow?<\/p>\n

For a second, I thought I\u2019d heard her wrong.<\/p>\n

What dinner?<\/p>\n

My dinner.<\/p>\n

What dinner?<\/p>\n

The one tomorrow night. I told you about it.<\/p>\n

No, you said you were thinking about having a few people over.<\/p>\n

I invited 12.<\/p>\n

I looked at the shredded dress, then back at her.<\/p>\n

My award ceremony is tomorrow.<\/p>\n

Patricia sighed\u2014not with embarrassment, but exhaustion, as though I were the difficult person here.<\/p>\n

I know about the ceremony, Clare.<\/p>\n

Apparently not enough.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s an award.<\/p>\n

Yes.<\/p>\n

And this is family.<\/p>\n

I nearly laughed.<\/p>\n

You cut up my gown because you invited 12 people to dinner.<\/p>\n

Someone has to cook. Someone has to serve. Linda can\u2019t stand for long because of her hip. And Harold doesn\u2019t eat anything spicy, so I was thinking your pot roast would be easiest.<\/p>\n

I just stared at her.<\/p>\n

The situation became so absurd it almost stopped being shocking. She had destroyed a custom-tailored gown because Harold didn\u2019t like spicy food.<\/p>\n

You live long enough and think you\u2019ve heard every possible argument. Then somebody brings Harold into it.<\/p>\n

What exactly did you think would happen? I asked.<\/p>\n

Patricia folded her arms.<\/p>\n
