She was sitting upright in bed with both hands pressed against her head.<\/p>\n

Her prom dress was still hanging from the closet door inside its plastic cover.<\/p>\n

Her silver shoes sat neatly beneath it.<\/p>\n

Prom was that night.<\/p>\n

But Kayla\u2019s hair was gone.<\/p>\n

Blonde strands covered the pillow.<\/p>\n

More were tangled in the sheets.<\/p>\n

Soft clumps were scattered across the carpet.<\/p>\n

It looked as though someone had tried to erase part of her while she slept.<\/p>\n

To understand why, I need to explain what had been happening in our family for months.<\/p>\n

My name is Rachel Adams.<\/p>\n

My husband, David, and I had been married sixteen years.<\/p>\n

We had two daughters.<\/p>\n

Kayla was seventeen.<\/p>\n

Reese was eight.<\/p>\n

Despite the nine-year age difference, they were incredibly close.<\/p>\n

Kayla had always treated Reese like a little shadow she was responsible for protecting.<\/p>\n

She braided Reese\u2019s hair before school.<\/p>\n

Let her follow along when she went shopping.<\/p>\n

Sat patiently through the endless pretend radio programs Reese recorded on a little pink tape recorder she had received for her seventh birthday.<\/p>\n

Then Kayla met Steven.<\/p>\n

He was a senior at her school.<\/p>\n

Polished.<\/p>\n

Confident.<\/p>\n

Captain of the debate team.<\/p>\n

Teachers liked him.<\/p>\n

Parents trusted him.<\/p>\n

And in the beginning, so did I.<\/p>\n

He was always polite.<\/p>\n

Always said please and thank you.<\/p>\n

Always asked how my day had been.<\/p>\n

He visited our house so often that eventually we gave him the spare-key code.<\/p>\n

On Saturday mornings, he would let himself in and call upstairs as though he already belonged there.<\/p>\n

Looking back, there were signs.<\/p>\n

Kayla became quieter.<\/p>\n

She stopped talking constantly at dinner.<\/p>\n

She began wearing long sleeves even as the weather grew warmer.<\/p>\n

She canceled plans with her closest friends.<\/p>\n

She always had an excuse.<\/p>\n

She was tired.<\/p>\n

She had homework.<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t feel well.<\/p>\n

I noticed.<\/p>\n

But I explained everything away.<\/p>\n

That is one of the hardest things for me to admit now.<\/p>\n

For months, Kayla had also been excited about prom.<\/p>\n

She talked about her dress constantly.<\/p>\n

The pictures.<\/p>\n

The corsage.<\/p>\n

Going with Steven.<\/p>\n

Her classmates were even saying she might win prom queen.<\/p>\n

The date was circled in pink on our kitchen calendar.<\/p>\n

And now, on the morning of the dance, she stumbled into the bathroom, saw herself in the mirror, and screamed.<\/p>\n

David found Reese sitting quietly on the edge of her own bed.<\/p>\n

His electric razor was on the nightstand.<\/p>\n

Her face was pale.<\/p>\n

But she didn\u2019t look sorry.<\/p>\n

\u201cReese,\u201d I said, struggling to keep my voice steady. \u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked at me.<\/p>\n

How could she possibly have an explanation for shaving her sister\u2019s head the morning of prom?<\/p>\n

Then the front door opened downstairs.<\/p>\n

Steven had arrived.<\/p>\n

He came upstairs and froze when he saw Kayla standing under the bright bathroom lights.<\/p>\n

For half a second, his expression went completely blank.<\/p>\n

Then concern appeared.<\/p>\n

\u201cBaby, don\u2019t cry,\u201d he said, reaching toward her. \u201cWe can fix it. Maybe get you a wig. You\u2019ll still be beautiful tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kayla collapsed against him, shaking.<\/p>\n

Then Reese stepped forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cut her hair so she couldn\u2019t go to prom with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steven gave a short laugh.<\/p>\n

Too sharp.<\/p>\n

Too loud.<\/p>\n

Then Reese said,<\/p>\n

\u201cYou hurt my sister all the time. I saw the purple marks where you grab her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everything went silent.<\/p>\n

Kayla stopped crying.<\/p>\n

Steven\u2019s arm tightened around her.<\/p>\n

\u201cChildren make things up,\u201d he said, looking at me. \u201cTell her, Kayla. Tell your mother how good I am to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kayla stared at the sink.<\/p>\n

Reese walked over to my phone.<\/p>\n

She opened the photo gallery.<\/p>\n

There were pictures.<\/p>\n

Dozens of them.<\/p>\n

Timestamps from late at night.<\/p>\n

Early mornings.<\/p>\n

Close-ups of Kayla\u2019s arms with marks shaped like fingers.<\/p>\n

Dark bruises along her ribs.<\/p>\n

Discoloration across her back.<\/p>\n

Places I had never seen because Kayla had become very good at hiding them.<\/p>\n

My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n

\u201cKayla,\u201d I whispered. \u201cIs this real?\u201d<\/p>\n

Steven immediately started talking.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe plays sports. Those could be from anything. This is crazy. I spent hundreds of dollars on tonight. I already booked a limo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not concern.<\/p>\n

Not fear.<\/p>\n

Money.<\/p>\n

Then Reese reached into her pajama pocket.<\/p>\n

She pulled out her little pink recorder.<\/p>\n

The same one she used for her pretend radio shows.<\/p>\n

She pressed play.<\/p>\n

Steven\u2019s voice filled the bathroom.<\/p>\n

He was laughing with someone.<\/p>\n

Talking about the afterparty.<\/p>\n

Talking about getting Kayla drunk.<\/p>\n

Talking about putting something in her drink so she couldn\u2019t fight him or leave.<\/p>\n

Then he said something worse.<\/p>\n

If Kayla got pregnant, she wouldn\u2019t be able to leave him for college.<\/p>\n

Kayla made a sound I will never forget.<\/p>\n

David stepped into the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet your hands off my daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Steven released her.<\/p>\n

He backed away.<\/p>\n

Then he looked at David.<\/p>\n

And smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think you want to do that, Mr. Adams.\u201d<\/p>\n

David\u2019s face went white.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I think you know why.\u201d<\/p>\n

I immediately began recording on my phone.<\/p>\n

Steven noticed.<\/p>\n

Then he looked directly at my husband.<\/p>\n

\u201cAsk him what he said to me behind the garage.\u201d<\/p>\n

David didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n

Steven\u2019s smile grew.<\/p>\n

\u201cTell her. Tell your wife you already knew I was a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

My husband swallowed.<\/p>\n

Then finally said,<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw Steven grab Kayla beside the driveway Tuesday night.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kayla\u2019s knees nearly gave out.<\/p>\n

\u201cI begged Dad not to tell you,\u201d she whispered. \u201cI didn\u2019t want prom ruined. I didn\u2019t want everyone knowing.\u201d<\/p>\n

David looked devastated.<\/p>\n

But before anyone could respond, Reese lifted the recorder again.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not the part I meant.\u201d<\/p>\n

She turned the cassette over.<\/p>\n

On the label, in her messy handwriting, were two words:<\/p>\n

AFTERPARTY PLAN.<\/p>\n

Steven stopped smiling.<\/p>\n

Reese pressed play.<\/p>\n

Another girl\u2019s voice came through.<\/p>\n

She sounded terrified.<\/p>\n

\u201cKayla\u2026 I\u2019m sorry. I should have told you sooner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kayla stared at the recorder.<\/p>\n
