\u201cThe school is across town.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo leave earlier. Or work from home once in a while and take them then.\u201d<\/p>\n

He sipped his coffee.<\/p>\n

\u201cScarlett, that\u2019s not practical.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nicki looked between us.<\/p>\n

\u201cMommy\u2019s leg isn\u2019t practical either, Dad.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the kitchen, Sasha shouted, \u201cNicki took my blue marker!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI did not!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou literally have it!\u201d<\/p>\n

Harold grabbed his briefcase.<\/p>\n

\u201cSee? Mornings are chaos.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he walked out.<\/p>\n

Three weeks earlier, I\u2019d slipped on wet tile outside a grocery store and broken my leg badly enough to require surgery and a cast. My doctor had forbidden me to drive.<\/p>\n

Before that, I handled breakfast, lunches, shoes, permission slips, and school drop-off for nine-year-old Sasha and seven-year-old Nicki.<\/p>\n

Harold never officially called any of it my responsibility. He simply became busy at exactly the right moments until it was.<\/p>\n

My mother drove over twice, our neighbor helped three mornings, and I paid for a car service once while the other parent in our house refused to take them.<\/p>\n

Every time I asked Harold, his answer was the same: he \u201ccouldn\u2019t be late for work.\u201d<\/p>\n

If I pushed, he\u2019d repeat it.<\/p>\n

Then came my hospital appointment.<\/p>\n

I took a taxi because Linda had already agreed to drive the girls.<\/p>\n

She was twenty-something, maybe thirty, pretty, with long dark hair and the kind of polished appearance most people couldn\u2019t manage at eight in the morning.<\/p>\n

Harold got out, walked around the car, and opened the passenger door for her.<\/p>\n

She smiled.<\/p>\n

Then he climbed behind the wheel, and they drove toward his office.<\/p>\n

I stood on my crutches watching the taillights disappear.<\/p>\n

Apparently, detours weren\u2019t the problem.<\/p>\n

The passenger was.<\/p>\n

For ten miserable minutes, I let myself imagine the obvious.<\/p>\n

Then I remembered Adele had spoken warmly about her boyfriend at the Christmas party.<\/p>\n

That proved nothing.<\/p>\n

Neither did Harold opening a car door for her.<\/p>\n

But one thing was undeniable.<\/p>\n
