Carl and I worked for the same company.<\/p>\n

We had both been there around ten years, though in different departments.<\/p>\n

I worked in operations.<\/p>\n

Carl worked in regional sales.<\/p>\n

Our boss, David, had known us for years.<\/p>\n

He and his wife had been to our home for barbecues.<\/p>\n

We had celebrated birthdays together.<\/p>\n

Once, when our son broke his arm and Carl was out of town, David even drove us to the hospital because my car wouldn\u2019t start.<\/p>\n

So when the company announced an end-of-quarter party at a restaurant outside town, I expected the usual.<\/p>\n

Bad speeches.<\/p>\n

Too much wine.<\/p>\n

Carl complaining about accounting.<\/p>\n

A few days before the party, Carl told me he needed to arrive early.<\/p>\n

I knew who she was.<\/p>\n

Dark-haired.<\/p>\n

Always perfectly put together.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going over some client handover stuff before everyone gets there,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

\u201cHandover?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust work stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat exactly are you handing over?\u201d<\/p>\n

Carl sighed.<\/p>\n

\u201cLaura, please. Do we really have to turn every boring work conversation into an interrogation?\u201d<\/p>\n

His tone bothered me.<\/p>\n

But then again, Carl had been impatient with me for months.<\/p>\n

Not openly cruel.<\/p>\n

Just distant.<\/p>\n

Our conversations had slowly turned into logistics.<\/p>\n

Bills.<\/p>\n

Groceries.<\/p>\n

The kids.<\/p>\n

Repairs around the house.<\/p>\n

After twenty-three years, I told myself marriages went through seasons.<\/p>\n

At least, that was what I wanted to believe.<\/p>\n

Saturday afternoon, Carl left almost three hours before I did.<\/p>\n

He kissed the side of my head on his way out.<\/p>\n

No compliment.<\/p>\n

No real goodbye.<\/p>\n

Just a quick kiss and the closing of the front door.<\/p>\n

I stood there for a few seconds wondering why it felt strange.<\/p>\n

Then I got ready and went to the party alone.<\/p>\n

I arrived a few minutes after seven.<\/p>\n

The moment I stepped into the private dining room, I heard Carl laughing.<\/p>\n

I looked toward the bar.<\/p>\n

And stopped.<\/p>\n

His arm was around Sheila\u2019s waist.<\/p>\n

Not brushing against her.<\/p>\n

Not helping her balance.<\/p>\n

Around her waist.<\/p>\n

She was leaning against him.<\/p>\n

For a few seconds, I tried to explain it away.<\/p>\n

Maybe someone had just taken a photograph.<\/p>\n

Maybe she had stumbled.<\/p>\n

Maybe I had walked in at the exact wrong moment.<\/p>\n

Then Carl leaned toward her and whispered something in her ear.<\/p>\n

She laughed.<\/p>\n

And moved even closer.<\/p>\n

My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n

I crossed the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cCarl.\u201d<\/p>\n

He turned.<\/p>\n

For half a second, his smile vanished.<\/p>\n

Then it returned.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sheila was still beside him.<\/p>\n

His hand was still on her hip.<\/p>\n

I stared at it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the hell is going on?\u201d<\/p>\n

Conversations around us began to stop.<\/p>\n

Carl took a sip from his drink.<\/p>\n

Then he looked around the room.<\/p>\n

And what I saw on his face wasn\u2019t panic.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t even guilt.<\/p>\n

It was relief.<\/p>\n

Like he had been waiting for this confrontation so he wouldn\u2019t have to start it himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell,\u201d he said, \u201cI suppose there\u2019s no point pretending anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPretending what?\u201d<\/p>\n

He shrugged.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess it\u2019s time to put everything on the table. I\u2019m with Sheila now.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at him.<\/p>\n

Then he added,<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, honey, what did you expect? I\u2019m not attracted to you anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Somebody behind me whispered, \u201cOh my God.\u201d<\/p>\n

I could barely breathe.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow dare you? I\u2019m your wife.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carl shrugged again.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, come on. To me, you\u2019ve been more like a housekeeper for years. I want to actually live for myself now.\u201d<\/p>\n

For one second, the whole room went still.<\/p>\n

Then Sheila laughed.<\/p>\n

Just once.<\/p>\n

As though Carl had said something clever.<\/p>\n

Something sharp.<\/p>\n

Something she was supposed to appreciate.<\/p>\n

I looked at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwenty-three years. Two children. And that\u2019s all I was to you?\u201d<\/p>\n

That finally made him hesitate.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not exactly what I meant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou literally just said it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI meant the marriage became routine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen say routine. Don\u2019t call me your housekeeper.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time, Carl looked embarrassed.<\/p>\n

Only briefly.<\/p>\n

I knew if I stayed there another second, I would either collapse or throw my drink at him.<\/p>\n

So I turned to leave.<\/p>\n

That was when David appeared behind me.<\/p>\n

He looked furious.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need to go.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGive yourself five minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t stay here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/p>\n

He handed me a glass of water.<\/p>\n

\u201cSit down first. Then decide.\u201d<\/p>\n
