Then my mother crossed her arms and added,<\/p>\n

\u201cYou didn\u2019t really contribute anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at them.<\/p>\n

I had booked the house.<\/p>\n

Paid the entire rental.<\/p>\n

Put the utilities in my name.<\/p>\n

And not one of them had given me a dollar.<\/p>\n

But instead of arguing, I nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three minutes later, I made one phone call.<\/p>\n

By that evening, they finally understood exactly whose vacation they had been enjoying.<\/p>\n

My name is James. I\u2019m twenty-nine, and for as long as I can remember, my family has spent one week every summer at the same beach house on the Carolina coast.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t luxurious.<\/p>\n

That was part of its charm.<\/p>\n

The wooden floors creaked.<\/p>\n

The porch wrapped around the house.<\/p>\n

From the upper deck, you could watch the ocean stretch almost endlessly toward the horizon.<\/p>\n

When I was a kid, my grandparents handled everything.<\/p>\n

They booked the place.<\/p>\n

Paid for it.<\/p>\n

Bought the groceries.<\/p>\n

Turned an ordinary rental into a family tradition.<\/p>\n

After they passed away, we kept returning.<\/p>\n

But somewhere along the way, the tradition changed.<\/p>\n

What had once been about spending time together became an annual argument about who deserved what.<\/p>\n

This year, I volunteered to organize everything.<\/p>\n

I contacted the owner.<\/p>\n

Signed the rental agreement.<\/p>\n

Transferred the deposit.<\/p>\n

Put the utilities under my name, just as the owner requested.<\/p>\n

My mother, my sister Emily, and Emily\u2019s husband Todd all promised they would reimburse me for their shares afterward.<\/p>\n

I believed them.<\/p>\n

Or at least I chose not to make an issue of it.<\/p>\n

Then, two days before the trip, Emily texted.<\/p>\n

\u201cMoney\u2019s a little tight right now. We\u2019ll make it up to you with groceries and stuff \ud83d\ude42\u201d<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, Todd sent me a Venmo request.<\/p>\n

Not money for the rental.<\/p>\n

A request asking ME to send HIM money for beach snacks.<\/p>\n

I actually stared at my phone for several seconds.<\/p>\n

Mom said nothing.<\/p>\n

She simply packed her giant sun hat, loaded her luggage into Emily\u2019s SUV, and showed up for vacation as though every expense had magically taken care of itself.<\/p>\n

I decided not to fight about it.<\/p>\n

I could afford the rental.<\/p>\n

What I wanted more than anything was one peaceful week.<\/p>\n

A book.<\/p>\n

Long walks near the water.<\/p>\n

Maybe a few mornings where nobody needed anything from me.<\/p>\n

That hope lasted approximately thirty minutes after my family arrived.<\/p>\n

I had gotten there first.<\/p>\n

I unlocked the house, carried in the groceries, checked the rooms, and made sure everything was working.<\/p>\n

Then Emily\u2019s SUV pulled into the driveway.<\/p>\n

She came through the front door with sand still on her shoes and headed straight down the hallway.<\/p>\n
